THURSDAY: ASU celebrates Year of the Rat 
Appalachian State University hosted a celebration of Chinese New Year (the Year of the Rat) on Thursday evening, Feb. 7 at the Plemmons Student Center. About 300 people attended --- some to partake of a free Chinese dinner, others to enjoy a sampling of music, poetry, martial arts and pageantry. Click here for more photos. Blaze damages Big Lots
Officers of the Boone Police Department responded to a burglar alarm at the Big Lots in New Market Centre just after 7:30 Wednesday morning and discovered large amounts of smoke at the rear of the building. Members of the Boone Fire Department were called to scene and arrived in less than 10 minutes. The store's fire alarm went off four minutes after their arrival. Read more.
One-half pound of cocaine seized
A long-term investigation by the Watauga County Sheriff's Office’s Special Operations Division came to an end Saturday with the seizure of eight ounces, or one half pound, of cocaine. Read more.
TV Times will move online
Soon, local TV viewers will be able to click instead of flipping pages to find their favorite show times. Mountain Times Publications is moving its TV Times online beginning Feb. 13, bringing broadcast schedules, features on stars, video clips and more to an expanded audience. Read more.
Students help spark Deep Gap VFD’s fund
The Deep Gap Volunteer Fire Department received a gift from the kindergarten class at Two Rivers Community School Monday morning. The students raised $300 for the department’s Firemen Fund. Read more.

Gloria Steinem promotes feminist progress during ASU visit
Feminist leader Gloria Steinem visited Appalachian State University Monday, Feb. 4, and spoke that evening on “The Progression of Feminism: Where Are We Going?” Steinem started off her presentation addressing the popular sentiment that feminism and the women’s movement is not necessary anymore. New WHS financing moves one step forward
The Watauga County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution that paves the for borrowing up to $70 million for construction of the new high school. The financing would have to be approved by the Local Government Commission and would also include paying back the county for money already spent on land purchases and preliminary construction expenses. Crime trends remain stable
The Watauga County Sheriff’s Office has released its preliminary 2007 crime statistics. The numbers show a steady pace for Watauga, with only slight differences over 2006. Read more.

Local housing prices on the rise
Despite a nationwide downturn in new housing construction, the value of new residential construction in Watauga County rose by $2 million last year, though the number of new single-family houses declined. Read more.

On Sunday evening, Appalachian State University Police Department received an anonymous report of a physical assault alleged to have occurred at 4 a.m. in the Kidd Brewer Stadium parking area.

Ice storm plays havoc
An ice storm early Friday morning covered the High Country with an average of one quarter of an inch of ice, although some locations received one half of an inch, according to the National Weather Service Web site. Read more.

A Greeneville, Tenn. couple is awaiting extradition to Boone on felony drug charges.
Teai Lynn Arwood, 32, and James Wesley Arwood, 36, were charged with with trafficking in opiates by possession on Jan. 25 after they were located by authorities in Greenville. Read more.
