App escapes Cullowhee with close victory

It’s always good to win a basketball game, especially in on the road in a hostile arena.

Patriots edge Pioneers

MORGANTON — When Freedom needed to make foul shots, it did. It didn’t look like such a bad idea for Watauga to put the Patriots on the foul line in the third quarter, when they hit 2-of-7 from the line. But Freedom turned it around in the fourth quarter by making its final 9-of-10, providing just enough offense to take a 99-95 victory over the visiting Pioneers. Read more.

Slow start upends Watauga girls
MORGANTON — The one thing Watauga’s girls’ basketball team wanted to avoid Tuesday night was a slow start to Freedom. The Patriots had other ideas. Freedom scored the first 14 points of its 58-44 victory over visiting Watauga. The Patriots eventually worked their way to a 20-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 33-14 halftime lead. Freedom handles Watauga
It wasn’t pretty for the Pioneer wrestlers who took only five wins out of the 14 weight classes Tuesday night at Lance-Eggers Gym against Freedom High. Both teams came in with 2-3 records in the conference, but Freedom left ahead winning 43-23. Read more.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — For the third time this season an Appalachian State wrestler has been named SoCon wrestler of the week. Tommy Hutchinson earned the award, announced on Wednesday afternoon, after an undefeated week on the mat. Read more.

Thomas named top player
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — GiGi Thomas averaged 20 points per game on .679 shooting last week to earn Southern Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week honors, the league office announced on Tuesday. Read more.

Mountaineers hold off pesky Elon
Beating Elon has rarely been easy for Appalachian State. The Mountaineers have never swept the Phoenix during Elon’s five-year tenure in the Southern Conference, and Appalachian State lost to Elon at the Holmes Center last year. Read more.

A runaway hit

Pioneer men lay siege to Spartans

When Watauga boys’ basketball coach Rob Sanders decided to switch to a fast-paced, running offense, what he saw Friday night was exactly what he had in mind. The Pioneers ran past, over and all around South Caldwell in their 96-63 pasting of the Spartans at Lentz-Eggers Gym. Sanders implemented the fast-paced offense in an effort to get his team to be more aggressive on that side of the court. Read more.

Mountaineers fall to Mocs on the Road
The Chattanooga Moccasins, who were beaten twice on the road last week, were missing three players either because of suspension or injury, and had two others who were nursing nagging injuries, finished their 89-77 victory over Appalachian State Saturday at McKenzie Arena. Read more.

GiGi Thomas set a season high with 23 points, but the Appalachian State women’s basketball team went to the free throw line just three times in a 73-63 loss to visiting Furman at the Holmes Center Saturday afternoon. Read more.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — There would be no comebacks at Timmons Arena Thursday night. Appalachian State, which allowed a Furman comeback to beat them here last season, allowed no such thing Thursday. Instead, it was a steady barrage of Jeremy Clayton and Donte Minter, Appalachian State’s two main weapons, that lifted the Mountaineers in their 84-66 drubbing of Furman in front of 1,086. South Caldwell downs Pioneer ladies

It took just eight minutes for the Watauga girls team to fall behind South Caldwell. It took the rest of the game for the Pioneers to try and catch up. Watauga outscored South Caldwell in two quarters, but could not overcome the Spartans and fell 61-55 Friday at Lentz-Eggers Gym. Read more.
