Jady Charles Arnold
Mr. Jady Charles Arnold, 73, of Stone Mountain Road, Vilas, died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 29, 2008 at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born August 5, 1934 in Mountain City, Tenn., the son of the late Fred Arnold and Lennith Forrester Arnold.
Mr. Arnold retired from Singer Furniture as a truck driver. He was a cattle farmer and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Surviving are his mother, Lennith Forrester Arnold of Mountain City, Tenn.; his caregivers, Miss and Chris Price of Mountain City; one niece, Melissa May, of Mountain City; two nephews, Mark Arnold of Mountain City and Robert Millsaps of Indiana; two sisters-in-law; Georgia Arnold of Mountain City and Anne Van Noppen Millsaps of Boone.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Floy Millsaps Arnold; one son, Freddie Charles Arnold; his father, Fred Arnold; and one brother, John Arnold.
Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Bethel Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Burl Greer and the Rev. Bill Hayden. Burial will follow in the Millsaps Family Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Millsaps Family Cemetery Fund, in care of Juanita Ward, 402 Stone Mountain Road, Vilas, N.C. 28692.

Peter “Pete” Sharpe Greene
Mr. Peter “Pete” Sharpe Greene, 74, of Greensboro, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, after a long illness.
He was born in Blowing Rock, N.C., on Jan. 27, 1934, to the late Robert Lee Greene and Nettie Sharpe Greene.
After graduating from Blowing Rock High School in 1951, Mr. Greene entered the U.S. Air Force and served his country for over eight years including time in Korea. He attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1955-1957) and earned his BS degree in 1963 and MA degree in 1965 from Appalachian State University. He was a Social Studies teacher at Grimsley High School (1963-1980), and Assistant Principal at both Dudley High School (1980-1993) and Eastern Guilford High School (1993-1995). He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Blowing Rock and Friendly Avenue Baptist Church in Greensboro. At Friendly Avenue Baptist Church he organized Troop 104 and became Scoutmaster for several years. He was also a former member of Hamilton Lakes Civitan Club.
After retiring, he enjoyed reading, traveling, and spending time with his wife at their cabin in Blowing Rock. He was an active member of the N.C. Retired School Personnel at local, district, and state levels. For many years he was a precinct worker in Greensboro and was also involved in the N.C. Teacher Fellowship Program.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Jane Lassiter Greene; and his children, Hal Lassiter Greene of Greensboro and Nettie Elizabeth Greene McKee and husband, Frank, of Delray Beach, Fla.; granddaughters, Taylor Jane and Amy Lynn McKee; sister, Mary Caroline Greene Robbins of Hickory, N.C.; and brother Rev. Robert (Pug) F. Greene and wife, Mary, of Blowing Rock. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Ben Greene of Marion, N.C.
A memorial service will be held at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. Following the memorial service, there will also be a graveside service at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock, N.C. at 3:30 p.m.
Visitation for friends and family will be held on Friday, Feb. 1, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Forbis & Dick Guilford Chapel, 5926 W. Friendly Ave.

Johnsie Phifer Tarlton Marsh
Mrs. Johnsie Phifer Tarlton Marsh, 93, of Marshville, N.C., died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at Autumn Care in Marshville.
She was born May 17, 1914 in Anson County, a daughter of the late Luther B. and Mary Maske Phifer.
Survivors include sons, Edwin Tarleton and wife, Shirley, of Glendale Springs, N.C., Cullie Tarleton and wife, Sylvia, of Blowing Rock, N.C., Douglas Tarlton and wife, Judy, of Mooresville, N.C., and Neal Tarleton and wife, Lynne, of Matthews, N.C.; step-daughters, Bonnie Avery and husband, Lewis, of Monroe, and Nancy Crump and husband, Junior, of Marshville; sisters, Grady Preslar, Rachel Allen and Alice Caudle, all of Peachland; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren
She was widowed first by Julian C. Tarlton and second by Hoyle L. Marsh. She was preceded in death by sisters, Ellie Phifer, Alma Newton, Ophelia Caudle, Edna Clark and Margie Thomas; and a brother, Carl Phifer.
A funeral to celebrate the life of Mrs. Marsh will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at 11 a.m. from the 1st Baptist Church with burial in the Marshville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the 1st Baptist Church Building Fund or to the choice of the donor. The Morgan and Son Funeral Home is serving Marsh family.
John R. Prince, Jr.
Mr. John R. Prince Jr., of Raleigh, N.C., passed away on Monday, Jan. 28, 2008. 
He was born in Mullins, S.C., on Jan. 20, 1940, to Pearl Ray and John R. Prince Sr.
Mr. Prince was educated in the public schools of North Carolina and graduated from Myers Park High School in Charlotte, N.C. He also attended NCSU and Wake Forest University. His business career began with Revelle Builders in Murfreesboro, N.C. Before selling to the employees and retiring, he owned Bobbitt & Associates and Bobbitt International LTD. In 1995 he bought into Steel Dynamics where he retired in 2005. John was also involved in real estate development and was one of the founders of Pack Rat Portable Mini Storage.
He was actively involved in the following: Bay Leaf Baptist Church (Deacon Emeritus) Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Board of Visitors), Wolfpack Club, Raleigh Rescue Mission, NC Baptist Foundation, Hiram #40 Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, Bay Leaf Community Historical Foundation, and Amran Temple. He was a charter member of the North Raleigh Exchange Club and served as club president and state president. He was the noted author of “My Very Best Friend, Charlie Campbell”. Although he received many awards and much recognition, he considered himself “one of God’s little nobodies”.
He is survived by his second loving wife, Brenda N. Prince; two sons, John R. Prince III and his wife, Jami, of Tega Cay, S.C.; James Ashley Warwick and his wife, Heather, of Raleigh, N.C.; and two daughters, Mary Mac Weems and husband, Shawn, of Raleigh, N.C.; Terra Warwick of Raleigh, N.C. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Sierra, Fallon, and Jackson Prince; Cooper and Anna Shearin Warwick; and Victoria Weems. He is survived by his second mother, Myra S. Prince; and two brothers, William B. Prince and wife, Donna, of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; James A. Prince and wife, Fran, of Greensboro, N.C. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his first wife, Kay U. Prince.
His celebration of life was held on Thursday, Jan. 31, at 2:00 p.m., at Bay Leaf Baptist Church, 12200 Bay Leaf Church Rd. Raleigh, N.C

Laura Oates Smith
Mrs. Laura Oates Smith, 88, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at her home in Wilmington.
She was born June 12, 1919, on a farm in Sampson County near Faison, N.C., to the late Edwin and Laura Mitchell Oates. 
Mrs. Smith was one of 11 children and the first in her family to graduate from college, from East Carolina Teachers’ College. She taught school for several years before marrying Philip C. Smith Jr., a U.S. Naval officer from Akron, Ohio, in 1951. They lived in Florida, Maine, Ohio, Hawaii, and Bermuda before settling in Wilmington in 1969. She was a loving wife, a great mom, and very devoted to her family.
She is survived by her husband; three children, Philip C. Smith III and wife, Charlotte, of New Orleans, La., Laura Melinda Jones and husband, Bruce, of Seattle, Wash., and Tim Smith and wife, Freda, of Boone, N.C.; three grandchildren, Jonathan Smith of Atlanta, Ga., Larson Smith of Wilmington, and Kelsey Smith of Boone; two step-grandchildren, Stephen Jones and wife, Jane, and Marc Jones, all of Seattle; one step-great-grandchild, Barrett Jones of Seattle; brothers and sisters, Margaret Martin of Faison, Robert Oates and wife, Margaret, of Clinton, N.C., Joyce Odom and husband, Tatum, of Mount Olive, N.C., and Sam Oates and wife, Jean, of Faison; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the home from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2008. A memorial service will be held at the Oates family cemetery near Faison at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008. A memorial service will be held in Boone at a later date.
Inurnment will be held at the U.S. Naval Academy Columbarium in Annapolis, Md.

Virginia Carr Byrd
Mrs. Virginia Carr Byrd, 87, of Rose Hill, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008 at Watauga Medical Center in Boone, N.C.
She was born March 10, 1920 in Duplin County and was the daughter of the late Osborn and Ellen Wells Carr of Wallace.
Mrs. Byrd was a life-long member of Oak Plain Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one son, David Byrd, Jr. and wife, Temple, of Garland; two daughters, Rev. Mary Ellen Gordon and husband, Rev. Frank Gordon of Candler, and Virginia Peurifoy and husband, Robert, of Boone; five grandchildren, David Graham Byrd of Kenansville, Hannah Randall of Maryland, Sarah Mack of Durham, and Rebekah and Nathan Peurifoy, both of Boone; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ellen Carr Clemmons of Raleigh.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David O. Byrd, Sr. on Oct. 20, 1992.
Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at Oak Plain Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Nancy Gladden officiating with Mr. Edgar Wells assisting. Burial will follow in Oak Plain Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Wallace.
Local memorial services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 9, at 2 o’clock, at Faithbridge United Methodist Church in Blowing Rock, with the Rev. Marianne Romanat officiating.

Jack Sanford Owens
Mr. Jack Sanford Owens, 66, of Round Hill, Va., died Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at INOVA Loudoun Hospital Center in Leesburg, Va.
He was born on Jan. 17, 1941 in Washington, D.C.
In the early 1960s Mr. Owens served his country in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Arlington where he served on the honor guard. He was the former owner and operator of the Fifth Street Floor Covering in Warrenton, Va., until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Carmen Gross Owens, of Round Hill, Va.; his daughter, Laura Owens Virts and husband, Randy, of Bentonville, Va.; and his sister, Betty Owens McCauley and husband, Mac, of Front Royal, Va. He is also survived by three nieces, Dawn Fadner of Pearland, Texas, Connie Atkins of Deer Park, Texas, and Tammy Lord of Pearland, Texas; aunts and uncle, Lena Owens, Mary Johnson, Jean Ward, Edna Herman, Josephine Herman, Mildred Herman, Reba Herman, Bill Wright; and several cousins, other family members and numerous friends.
He was preceded in death by an infant son; and his parents, Willis Sanford and Eva Laura Herman Owens; his grandparents, Martin L. and Junie Hollars Herman; and John and Jenny Fox Owens.
Arrangements were handled by Loudoun Funeral Chapels in Leesburg, Va. Rev. Jim Wishmeyer officiated at the service. Interment was beside his parents at the Panorama Memorial Gardens in Strasburg, Va.

Dixie Mae Hodges Hayes
Mrs. Dixie Mae Hodges Hayes, 87, of Baird’s Creek Road, Vilas, died Friday morning, Jan. 25, 2008 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation.
She was born May 22, 1920 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late James Gilbert and Florence Presnell Hodges.
Mrs. Hayes was retired from ASU, and was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Dwight W. Hayes, one daughter, Linda Gragg of Vilas; one son, James Hayes and wife, Julie, of Vilas; six grandchildren, Rick Hayes of Newton, Dixanna Howell and husband, David, of Newton, Mark Gragg and wife, Jennifer, of Lewisville, Robert Gragg and wife, Melissa, of Hiddenite, Carrie Hayes and Matthew Hayes, both of Vilas; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and a number of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, William H. “Bill” Hayes; and nine brothers and sisters.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon, Jan. 27, 2008, at 3 o’clock at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church. Officiating was the Rev. Wynn Greer and the Rev. Carl Wilson. Burial followed at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Chase C. Main
Mr. Chase C. Main, 102, of 309 Main Road, Trade, Tenn., passed away Friday, Jan. 25, 2008 in Wellmont Bristol Hospice House after a brief illness.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Trade, Tenn. He was born July 7, 1905, the second eldest of 13 to the late Frank Main and Elizabeth Snyder Main.
Mr. Main was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Zionville, N.C.
His life has been a true testament of a life well lived by a remarkable man. He has seen our world go from horse and buggy to the technical world of today. He was a farmer and loved to hunt and fish.
Survivors include his daughter, Harlene Main Castle of Bristol, Tenn.; grandson, John Castle and wife, Alessa, of Bristol, Tenn.; four great-grandchildren, Casey, Candis, Kelsey and Chase Castle, all of Bristol; three sisters, Homa Wallace, Muriel Wallace and Helen Farmer, all of Trade; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 76 years, Ruby A. Main on June 20, 2006; an infant son, Chase, Jr.; three brothers, Ted Main, Gillum Main and Edd Main; six sisters, Grace Forrester, Ruby Church, Margie Collins, Pearl Main and Peggy Burkett.
Services were conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008 at Friendship Baptist Church, Route 88, Zionville, N.C. with Pastor Maurice Ward and Pastor Derrick Wilson officiating. Burial followed in Greer-Main Cemetery, Trade, Tenn. Pallbearers will be nephews.

Howard Grady Phillips
Mr. Howard Grady Phillips, 83, of Snowy Oak Road, Boone, died Friday morning, Jan. 25, 2008 at his home. 
He was born March 13, 1924 in the Todd community of Watauga County to Robert Hill and Martha Phillips.
Mr. Phillips was a member of Pilot Mountain Baptist Church. He retired as a carpenter from Greene Construction Company and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Clara Hartley Phillips; three daughters, Clara Virginia Jeppi and husband, Joe, of Baltimore, Md., Mary Katherine Addis and husband, Jimmy, of Glen Burnie, Md.; and Joan Alderson and husband, David, of Boone; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce Carlton and husband, Harold, of Deep Gap and Viola Greene of Boone; and one brother, Willard Phillips of Baltimore, Md.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Phillips; one grandson, Richie Whitfield; three sisters, Mabel Phillips, Virginia Bowles and Opal Norris; and three brothers, Robert, J. D. and Russell Phillips.
Military graveside services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock at the Hartley Cemetery in the Cool Springs community, officiated by the Rev. Delmar James.

Martha Hicks Roberts
Mrs. Martha Hicks Roberts, 65, of Boone, died Saturday, January 26, 2008, at Glenbridge Health Care.
She was born Sept. 11, 1942, a daughter of the late Martin Levi and Viney Hicks Hicks. Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker and a member of Beech Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Roberts Hopkins and husband, William, of Crumpler; one granddaughter, Dakota Ward of Crumpler; one grandson, Dustin Ward of Crumpler; three sisters, Sally Presnell of Boone, Loyce Carswell and husband, Roy, of Montezuma, Linda Ward and husband, Hillard, of Sugar Grove; two brothers, Lee Hicks and wife, Wilma, of Newland, and Arnold Hicks of Zionville; one uncle, Ben Hicks of Banner Elk; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vaughn Staley Roberts; and four sisters, Hazel Birdsong, Louvenia Humphrey, Ruth Poarch and Clemmie Bears.
Services will be conducted Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Beech Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Warren officiating. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1-2 p.m. Private committal services will follow at Hicks Family Cemetery.
The family will recieve friends Monday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m., at the church, prior to the service.
