SPARTANBURG, S.C. — GiGi Thomas averaged 20 points per game on .679 shooting last week to earn Southern Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week honors, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Thomas led the Appalachian State women’s basketball team to a 92-79 win over Wofford Monday night.
The Tallahassee, Fla. native poured in a season-high 23 points on Saturday against Furman, hitting 11-of-17 shots. She pulled down a team-high five rebounds and dished out four assists as the team fell 73-63 to the Paladins.
The sophomore guard did not cool down over the weekend as she knocked in 6-of-7 field goal attempts in the first half and 8-of-11 in the game in the Mountaineers’ win over Wofford. Thomas added three assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals in the contest.
Thomas earned SoCon all-freshman honors last season and has recorded 10 or more points in 13 games this season en route to 11.8 points per game on .428 shooting.
The award is Appalachian’s first of the season, after Whitney Tossie and Maria Grimes were named Players of the Week a season ago. Chattanooga’s Alex Anderson has won the award in five of 10 weeks so far this season.
Appalachian (5-15, 2-6) takes to the road this weekend with a 5 p.m. game at Chattanooga Saturday and a 5 p.m. showdown Monday at Western Carolina.
