SPARTANBURG, S.C. — For the third time this season an Appalachian State wrestler has been named SoCon wrestler of the week. Tommy Hutchinson earned the award, announced on Wednesday afternoon, after an undefeated week on the mat.

Tommy’s twin brother Eddie was also named SoCon wrestler of the week on Jan. 10.

Hutchinson, a senior from Brandon, Fla., was one of two Mountaineers to post a perfect 2-0 record for the week. He beat Chattanooga’s Nick Davis in a 4-3 decision and defeated Gardner-Webb’s Brendan Couture, 5-4. His record improved to 16-15 on the season with nine pins.

BUIES CREEK — The Appalachian State wrestling team, losers of their last two matches, bounced back with a vengeance on Tuesday night to defeat the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs 34-12. Two pins and one tech fall buoyed the Mountaineers (8-7) who didn’t trail all night.

Action got underway at 133-pounds when Terreyl Williams scored two takedowns in the first period, helping him to a 10-5 victory over Rob Tate. At 141-pounds, Marcus Cox earned three takedowns in the final two minutes to prevail over Chas Franz, 8-5. Scott Ervin ranked No. 12 at 149 pounds in the latest NWCA poll, released Wednesday, dominated Joshua Lowe and took a 20-4 victory.

Eddie Hutchinson wasted no time in defeating Austin Reece at 157-pounds, pinning the Bulldog after only 1:20. Tommy Hutchinson followed suit with brother Eddie by winning his 165-pound match 5-4 over Brandon Couture. At 174-pounds, Neal Martin beat Chad Davis 6-1.

Jared Campbell pinned Windell Wilson at 285-pound bout. Campbell earned a quick takedown, and secured the pin only 2:13 into the match. The pin victory is Campbell’s first of the season. To conclude the match at 125-pounds, John Harkey made his collegiate debut against Tommy Bennett. Bennett took the match to Harkey from the beginning, pinning the Mountaineer with 40 seconds remaining in the first period.
