Bobcats sweep Erskine
BANNER ELK — Lees-McRae topped Erskine 74-69 in Conference Carolinas action Monday night at Williams Gymnasium.
The win snaps a nine game losing streak for the Bobcats (3-14, 2-9), but it did not come easily for Lees-McRae.
Erskine (5-11, 2-8) went on a 19-8 run to take a 34-22 lead in the first half.
But with 4:33 to play in the half, freshmen Aaron Woodacre and Nick DeSchepper cut the lead in half with back to back field goals from beyond the 3-point arc. DeSchepper drew the foul on his shot and completed the rare four-point play, cutting Erskine’s lead to 34-29.
The Bobcats used the 3-pointers to steal the momentum and claimed a 41-37 halftime lead.
With the game tied 67-67, freshman Aaron Willey put the Bobcats up for good by making three foul shots down the stretch to give Lees-McRae a give 70-67 lead with 2:32 left to play.
“I am proud of the character this team displayed tonight,” Lees-Mcrae coach Scott Polsgrove said. “We battled tooth and nail from start to finish to earn this one.”
Woodacre led the way for the Bobcats with 18 points while Hairston and DeSchepper added 16 and 10 respectively. Brandon Wright led the way for the Fleet with a game high 29 points, 27 of which came from behind the 3-point line.
Lees-McRae women 73, Erskine 42
BANNER ELK — Lees McRae snapped a five-game losing streak with its convincing win over Erskine Monday night.
Lees-McRae (5-12, 4-7) rolled to a 40-28 halftime lead and never looked back in its victory over the Fleet (2-14, 2-8). Stephanie Mullinax led the Bobcats with a game high 20 points, while also pulling down five rebounds. Chahkia Harrison went 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point line in scoirng14 points, while Cortney Furr added 13 points and nine rebounds.
