Furman rolls

by App State
From staff reports

GiGi Thomas set a season high with 23 points, but the Appalachian State women’s basketball team went to the free throw line just three times in a 73-63 loss to visiting Furman at the Holmes Center Saturday afternoon.

Appalachian State (4-15, 1-7 SoCon) shot 49 percent from the field in the game compared to 44 percent for Furman. However, Furman (6-14, 1-8) knocked down 17-of-21 free throws, while ASU made just 2-of-3 from the charity stripe.

The Mountaineers did not make up the difference from the 3-point line either, hitting 1-of-5 attempts.

Furman converted 6-of-18 from beyond the arc.

Furman opened the game with an 11-2 run before Brittany Mixon converted a three-point play and Thomas drove the lane for her second bucket of the game to cut the lead to four. Thomas would score five-straight points before Whitney Tossie took over on both ends of the court, forcing turnovers and converting them into points.

Tossie finished the game with 16 points and five steals.

Thomas scored 11 first-half points, while Tossie added six points, two assists and a pair of steals. The Paladins led 35-28 at the half.

Appalachian State pulled to within 49-40 in the second half when Whitney Randolph drove the lane for her second layup of the game. Thomas stole the inbounds pass and laid it in to cut the Paladin advantage to 49-42.

However, Appalachian State never made another serious run at the Paladins. Furman led by 15 points before Frances Hernandez knocked down a three-pointer from the corner with a minute to play. Thomas scored the final bucket of the game on a layup with just a second left.

The Mountaineers host Wofford on Monday at 5 p.m. in the first half of a double-header. The men’s team faces off against Elon at 7:30.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Appalachian State was not able to hold onto its perfect SoCon record, falling 27-9 to No. 19 Chattanooga Sunday.

The Mountaineers (7-7, 1-1 SoCon) managed just two individual wins over the Mocs (7-5, 2-0). At 149 pounds, No. 13 ranked senior Scott Ervin secured six team points for the Mountaineers by pinning C.J. Baron at the 1:09 mark of the first period.

It was Ervin’s third pin of the season.

His overall record this year is 26-5.

Appalachian State’s other victory came from senior Tommy Hutchinson. Hutchinson earned a 4-3 riding time victory over Nick Davis at 165 pounds.

Ervin’s pin victory at 149-pounds cut the Mocs’ lead to 21-6. Eddie Hutchinson failed to extend the Mountaineers’ winning streak, dropping a decision to Seth Garvin, 6-3. Tommy Hutchinson’s victory at 165-pounds cut Chattanooga’s lead to 24-9. In the final bout, Neal Martin dropped a 6-2 defeat to No. 14-ranked Lloyd Rogers.
