Friday Night: South Caldwell downs Pioneer ladies

It took just eight minutes for the Watauga girls team to fall behind South Caldwell. It took the rest of the game for the Pioneers to try and catch up.
Watauga outscored South Caldwell in two quarters, but could not overcome the Spartans and fell 61-55 Friday at Lentz-Eggers Gym.

Friday Night: Pioneer men lay siege to Spartans

When Watauga boys’ basketball coach Rob Sanders decided to switch to a fast-paced, running offense, what he saw Friday night was exactly what he had in mind.
The Pioneers ran past, over and all around South Caldwell in their 96-63 pasting of the Spartans at Lentz-Eggers Gym. Sanders implemented the fast-paced offense in an effort to get his team to be more aggressive on that side of the court.

Sports update: ASU pounds Furman
GREENVILLE, S.C. — There would be no comebacks at Timmons Arena Thursday night. Appalachian State, which allowed a Furman comeback to beat them here last season, allowed no such thing Thursday. Instead, it was a steady barrage of Jeremy Clayton and Donte Minter, Appalachian State’s two main weapons, that lifted the Mountaineers in their 84-66 drubbing of Furman in front of 1,086. Playing for first place

It didn’t take long for Chattanooga to get a chance at revenge with Appalachian State. The Mocs, still smarting from a rough two-game road trip, get a second shot at the Mountaineers Saturday at McKenzie Arena. Tip-off is at 3 p.m. Appalachian State, after playing three straight home games, returned to the road Thursday at Furman, but results were not available by press time. However, should the Mountaineers beat Furman, they will go into Chattanooga looking to take first place in the Southern Conference’s North Division away from the Mocs. Read more.

Jackson to play in Senoir Bowl
MOBILE, Ala. — Former Appalachian State receiver Dexter Jackson has had a busy postseason. Fresh off an solid appearance in the East-West Shrine Game, Jackson has been invited to participate in the prestigious Under Armour Senior Bowl this week. Kickoff is Saturday at 3 p.m. at sold-out Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile. The game will be televised live on the NFL Network. Read more.

Sims named player of the week in SoCon

Appalachian State point guard Donald Sims was named the Southern Conference’s player of the week following his two-game performance last week. Read more.

UNCG slips by ASU
GREENSBORO — For the third time in as many games, it came down to the final possession for the Appalachian State women’s basketball team. For the first time during the stretch, things did not go the right way for the Mountaineers, as the team fell 56-54 at UNC Greensboro on Monday afternoon.

Appalachian State coach Houston Fancher said the Mountaineers grew up as a team while playing games on the road. They grew into a half-game of first place of the Southern Conference’s North Division lead while playing at home. Read more.
