App State
outlasts Phoenix
From staff reports
ELON — Forty minutes was not quite enough to decide Appalachian State’s showdown with Elon Saturday.
Instead, the Mountaineers needed an overtime period before beating the Phoenix 58-56 at Alumni Gym. It was Appalachian State’s first Southern Conference victory of the season.
The Mountaineers (4-13, 1-5), who won their second straight game, got 13 points from Whitney Tossie.
Tossie also collected three steals in the first half and played a vital role in the Mountaineers’ overtime success.
The senior grabbed four steals in the game to go along with five rebounds.
The first overtime period of the season for ASU started as well as it could when Brittney Spencer knocked down a jumper and Brittany Mixon hit a pair of free throws to give ASU a 57-53 lead after just one minute of play.
Tossie was knocked to the ground on a layup attempt but play continued as Elon (6-12, 2-5) used the 5-on-4 advantage to drain a 3-pointer to pull within a point as two minutes remained in the period.
Trailing by one in the waning seconds of overtime, Elon missed a jumper in the paint. Appalachian State’s Sam Ramirez fought for the rebound with six seconds remaining and was awarded the jump ball.
Robin Colbert extended the lead to 58-56 with a free throw with six seconds left, before Elon’s final attempt rimmed out at the buzzer to give Appalachian the win.
ASU plays at UNCG Monday afternoon.
