Cavs pull away from WHS

ICARD — Watauga’s girls’ basketball team can at times be exciting to watch, and at other times, frustrating. The Pioneers fell 76-55 to East Burke Tuesday night, but could have stayed closer had they not stopped scoring during key times of the game. Watauga put itself in a catch-up situation the entire game and actually did stay in striking distance.

ICARD — After scoring 53 points in one half in a win over A.C. Reynolds, Watauga boys’ basketball coach Rob Sanders could only helplessly watch his Pioneers score just seven in the second quarter Tuesday at East Burke.

Appalachian State’s Francis Hernandez hit four 3-pointers against East Tennessee State Wednesday night. One of them even led to four points.

Forfeits hurt Pioneers
With three forfeits on the night, the Watauga wrestling team started out on its backs and was unable to get back on top, losing to East Burke 43-31 Tuesday night at Lentz-Eggers Gym.

Appalachian State has already proved it can win on the road. However, winning the third out of a three-game homestand would go a long way in helping the Mountaineers make a run at a North Division championship.

Rumble at Holmes
Appalachian State could not have found a better time to be playing its best basketball. The Mountaineers, 9-6 overall 4-2 in the Southern Conference, host Chattanooga in a key North Division showdown Thursday at the Holmes Center. Read more.

MISENHEIMER — Pfeiffer beat Lees-McRae 89-71 in Conference Carolinas action Monday night. The Falcons (8-4, 4-2 Carolinas Conference) took a 19 point lead before settling for a 16 point, 47-31 halftime lead. Read more.

ASU slips by UNCG
For a while, it took Appalachian State one individual victory at a time before finally claiming a 22-14 victory over UNC Greensboro at Varsity Gym Sunday. But there were enough Mountaineers, especially in the middle of the match, to overcome the Spartans by the end. Read more.

ASHEVILLE — It seemed that whenever A.C. Reynolds needed some points, the Rockets turned to point guard Karlee Taylor. It’s no wonder. Taylor made five 3-point baskets and scored 29 points in the Rockets’ 64-53 victory over Watauga Friday night. Read more.

DAVIDSON — Brittany Mixon’s 13 second-half points were not enough for the Mountaineers to overcome stellar three-point shooting against the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday, as the team fell 80-65.

Fast start lifts ASU over Greensboro
It only took Appalachian State 11 minutes to build a 22-point lead on UNC Grensboro. From there, UNCG had no chance against the Mountaineers. Read more.
ASU sweeps S.C. road games
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — At one point of its season, Appalachian State was nursing a three-game losing streak and faced five road games before returning to the friendly confines of the Holmes Center. One month later, the Mountaineers won four of those games on the road, including their 52-49 win over Wofford Thursday night in front of 1,342 at Benjamin Johnson Arena. The win was Appalachian State's third straight, all coming in South Carolina. Read more.
