George Arthur Flowers, Jr.

Mr. George Arthur Flowers, Jr., 84, of Flowers Drive, Boone, died Tuesday Jan. 15, 2008 at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born August 13, 1923 in Catawba County, a son of George and Mildred Parlier Flowers.
Mr. Flowers was a member of the Boone United Methodist Church. In 1939 he was a radio announcer at WHKY in Hickory until joining the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served on the Mine Sweeper USS Sentinel, AM-113 until it was sunk during the Invasion of Sicily. He was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received during that battle. He was treated at the New York Naval Hospital, then transferred to the Naval Hospital in Charleston, S.C.
On June 20, 1944 he met Millie Thompson who worked in the Admiral’s Office at Charleston Navy Yard. They were married Sept. 20, 1944 at the naval base chapel. They returned to Hickory and WHKY where George gathered news for United Press International. Later they moved to Shelby where he helped complete building Radio Station WOHS. Soon after he transferred to Waynesville to build Radio Station WHCC.
Following two years he and Millie moved to Culpeper, Va. to build their own Radio Station WCVA. George did play by play broadcasting of high school and college baseball and football from 1947 until 1957. After selling the station, he and Millie returned to Hickory where he continued to work for UPI.
In 1977 Mr. Flowers purchased Flowers Photo Shop before establishing Flowers Photography. He presented some 4 million negatives and prints to the Boone Chamber of Commerce for the people of the county. His news and studio negatives documented area history from 1957 to 2004 and are available to local people and area businesses. Many of his photos were also published around the world.
He helped organize the Watauga County Rescue Squad in 1962 and served as an active member until 2001. In 1965 he and other Shriners organized the Appalachian Shrine Club. He served as President of the Club in 1967, then Secretary and Treasurer for 23 years. He also served as the Shriners Hospital Coordinator for 20 years.
Mr. Flowers is survived by his wife, Millie Thompson Flowers; one son, George Arthur Flowers III and wife, Beth, of Raleigh; two daughters, Cecile Flowers Rbeihat of Raleigh and Patricia Flowers Wright and husband, Steve, both of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; three granddaughters, Erin and Megan Dorety and Amanda Massie and husband, Travis; and two grandsons, Trae Wright and Ian Flowers; and his sister-in-law, Mildred Flowers of Hickory.
Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Boone United Methodist Church, officiated by Dr. George Naff and Dr. Rev. George Thompson. Entombment will follow at the Mount Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Patty Lee Hass
Mrs. Patty Lee Hass of Durham, N.C. went to be with her Lord on Jan. 15, 2008, after a 20 month struggle with cancer.
She spent what she described as a wonderful childhood in Lake Lure where she attended various local schools. She learned photography under the guidance of her dad. She was an accomplished water-skier. She enjoyed life and many friends on the shores of Lake Lure, under the granite cliffs and Chimney Rock Park.
Mrs. Hass earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry at Furman University. Her career spanned government and industrial organizations. Her contributions include assisting in the development of the world’s first high throughput analytical chemistry laboratory, early development of laboratory information networks, and projects that lead to environmental and human health improvement. Noteworthy project examples are the Love Canal, NY and Times Beach, MO environmental remediations, and the FDA approval of the pharmaceuticals Lipitor and 5-Fluorouricil. The latter was used in her cancer therapy. She was President of Chatham Research, LLC at the time of her passing.
She was a very active mom. She and Cindy were seen everywhere together, including the Sanderson High Band tour of the UK. She was an active member of the Chapel Hill Bible Church, contributing countless photos of what she described as the cutest kids anywhere to the photoministry. She is remembered at the Beacon of Hope, Nairobi, Kenya for providing family photos to those affected by AIDS. She particularly benefited from her membership in the Bible Study Fellowship where she assisted the treasurer.
Mrs. Hass made a deliberate decision each day to be happy, regardless of circumstances. She carried that habit right through to the end of her time on earth. She particularly wants us to know how grateful she is to God for the wonderful, happy life He gave her.
Survivors include her husband, J. Ronald Hass, Ph. D.; a daughter, Cynthia Ragsdale of Raleigh, N.C.; a step-daughter, Jennifer Hass of Chicago, Ill.; her parents, Dr. and Mrs. William H. Burch of Lake Lure, N.C.; two sisters, Jo Marple of Weaverville, N.C. and Robin Parton of Rutherfordton, N.C.; and a brother, Scott Burch of Lake Lure.
A memorial service will be held at the Church of Transfiguration in Bat Cave, N.C. at a later date.

Carolyn Watson Horney
Mrs. Carolyn Watson Horney, 56, of Banner Elk, passed away on Tuesda,y Jan. 15, 2008 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.
She was born a daughter of Reba Miller of Matney and the late Leonard Watson.
Mrs. Horney worked as a RN for Cannon Memorial Hospital for 30 years. She enjoyed collecting books and cross stitching. She was a member of Elk Valley Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Dennis Horney; her two sons, Danny Horney and wife, Jessica, of Matney and Randy Horney and wife, Judy, also of Matney; two brothers, Johnny Watson and Jerry Watson, both of Matney; four grandchildren, Matthew, Heather, Chelsea and Dakota. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Anna Mae Horney of Banner Elk; several brothers and sister-in-laws; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Elk Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy McGuire officiating.
The Horney family will receive friends on Friday, Jan. 18 from 6-8 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home of Newland.

Gilma Brown Roberts
Mrs. Gilma Brown Roberts, 64, of 106 Woodland Hills Road, Asheville, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008.
She was born May 18, 1943 in Watauga County. She was the daughter of the late Ray Wilson Brown and Ola Estelle Norris Brown. She lived 35 years in Caldwell County before moving to Asheville in 2003.
Mrs. Roberts retired from Caldwell Community College in 2003. Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Don M. Roberts; two daughters, Cynthia Zimbrich and husband, Robbie, of Knoxville, Tenn. and Jamye Davis and husband, Al, of Asheville; a brother, Gary Brown and wife, Lynda, of Boone; granddaughters, Maggie Zimbrich and Katie Davis.
The family will receive friends from 2-3:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Avenue, Weaverville.

George Carter “G.C.” Ragan, Jr.
Mr. George Carter “G.C.” Ragan, Jr., 73, of Hickory Lane, Boone, passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 15, 2008, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born in Watauga County, March 30, 1934, a son of the late George Carter Ragan, Sr., and Maud Grogan Ragan.
Mr. Ragan graduated from Elkland High School in Todd, N.C. and received a Master’s degree in Technology and Education from Appalachian State University in 1965. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He was a member of Deerfield United Methodist Church, and was one of the founders of Santa’s Toy Box and a former member of the Jaycees.
He was a member of the Watauga County Board of Education from 1978 until 1984 and was employed as the first Vocational Education Director for Watauga County Schools in 1965; he later was an Associate Professor in the Department of technology at ASU. He was a licensed building contractor and owned and operated a building supply company and real estate business from 1971 until 1990. Mr. Ragan was employed by the Town of Boone as a Development Facilitator and retired from the Watauga County Board of Education as Construction Coordinator in 2001.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Wilma Moretz Ragan; two sons, Jeffrey Lynn Ragan and Gregory George Ragan, both of Boone; two grandchildren, Blake Richard Ragan and Brooke Abigail Ragan; a daughter-in-law, Teri Pfeiffer Ragan of Hampstead, N.C.; two sisters, Paris Ragan Winebarger and Helen Ragan Brown, both of Boone; one brother, Robert “Bob” Ragan of Greensboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Dee Ragan Cooke.
Services will be conducted Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, at noon, at Deerfield United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Jeff Sweeney and the Rev. Barry Raker. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday morning from 10 o’clock until noon in the church fellowship hall.

Florence Parker Harris Adams

Mrs. Florence Parker Harris Adams, 3700 Taylor Glen Lane, Concord, N.C., died Jan. 13, 2008 at 10:30 p.m.
She was born at Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D.C. on August 30, 1921, to Lt. Lee and Beatrice Harris.
Mrs. Adams followed her father from Maryland to New York, Oklahoma, California, the Philippines, Kentucky, Indiana, Minnesota, Texas, Virginia, and Florida. She married a Naval Aviator in November 1941 and followed him from Florida, to Texas, Hawaii, California, Washington, D.C., Virginia and North Carolina. She attended Nazareth Academy, Bardstown Kentucky, University of Minnesota, University of Houston, University of Alabama, Caldwell Community College, and Northern Virginia College graduating with an RN degree. She received her cardiovascular nurse specialist training at the University of Texas, Houston. She practiced nursing at Watauga Medical Center for many years. Her husband retired from the Navy in 1971 to Boone, N.C., where he graduated from Appalachian State University (ASU) and he worked at ASU or on the golf course until his death in 2001.
After following her father and husband for 50 years, she lived in Boone for 30 years where she enjoyed nursing and playing golf. She moved to Taylor Glen Baptist Retirement Home in 2002 where she lived until her death.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the ALS Society, Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter, 120-101 Penmarc Drive, Raleigh, N.C. 27603.
Her survivors include a son, William Lee Adams, Jr. of Wilmington, N.C.; three daughters, Patricia L. Adams of Winston Salem, N.C., Clarita King of Concord, N.C., and Joan Moore of Boone, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and 3 3/4 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, William Lee Adams of Boone, N.C.; and her father and mother, Lee and Beatrice Harris of San Francisco, Calif.
The funeral and burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery. There will be a memorial service at Taylor Glen, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008.

Jesse Lane Burchell
Mr. Jesse Lane Burchell of Eden, N.C., died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at Morehead Nursing Center, where he had been a resident for two years.
He was born in Leaksville on May 14, 1935, the only child of Russell Morton and Virginia Shockley Burchell.
Mr. Burchell attended Leaksville schools, graduating in 1953 from Tri-City High School. He attended UNC Chapel Hill for one year before moving with his parents to Flint, Mich. He worked in the automobile plants and graduated from Flint Junior College where he was on the tennis team. He completed college at the Flint campus of the University of Michigan and served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Burchell returned to North Carolina where he worked in Greensboro for E.P. Thornton. Shortly afterwards he began work as an accountant with Fieldcrest Mills, becoming insurance manager there. In 1966 he and his partner, Garvin Warren, purchased Wall Insurance Agency in Leaksville. That agency was purchased in 1993 by BB&T Insurance Services and subsequently moved to Greensboro.
A diligent corporate citizen, Mr. Burchell was a member of the Leaksville Jaycees where he worked for the consolidation of Leaksville, Spray, and Draper, now Eden. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Eden and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He served Morehead Hospital on the Board of Trustees during the first capital campaign. He was elected to the Rockingham Community College Foundation Board and later became a Trustee of the college, serving as chairman of that group. In 2001 RCC named Jess “Friend of the College”. He endowed a scholarship in honor of Dr. Robert W. Long, dean of RCC
Other affiliations of importance to Mr. Burchell were his church, Leaksville United Methodist, where he served on the Board of Trustees; Meadow Greens Country Club during an exciting time of the construction of six clay tennis courts. This tennis facility helped to bring county tournaments to Eden for many years. He also helped in the planning and building of six courts at the Eden Family YMCA, and it was there that he participated in many tournaments, often with his son or daughter as a partner. His happiest honor was the celebration naming the YMCA courts “The Jesse Burchell Tennis Center”. Litchfield Country Club in Pawleys Island, S.C., was another favorite tennis site for Jess. He was an avid player until his health deteriorated in late 2001.
Jess married in 1961 to the former Toni Flanagan. She survives, as well as two children, a daughter, Emily Lane Burchell of Greensboro; and a son, Alan Clay Burchell and his wife, Sonya Smith Burchell, and their son, Alan Clay, Jr., of Boone, N.C. Also surviving are many cousins and friends.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon, Jan. 13, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Leaksville United Methodist Church, followed by interment at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Reidsville.

Ray Frank Callaway
Mr. Ray Frank Callaway, 82, of Valdese, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008 at his home after battling cancer.
He was born in Lincoln County on June 7, 1925, to the late William Mitchell Callaway and Nellie Elizabeth Austin Callaway.
Mr. Callaway honorably served his country in World War II from 1943-1946, serving on both the U.S.S. Paul Hamilton DD-590 and the U.S.S. Vulcan AR-5.
He worked for many years in Charlotte, mostly at Celanese Development Laboratories, where he made several discoveries that were patented by the company.
Mr. Callaway moved to Valdese in 1969 for managerial and consulting opportunities at local textile plants such as Burke Mills and Wamsutta Mills.
He was one of the founders of International Textiles (I-Tex) in Icard, which was acquired by O’Mara Textiles in Rutherford College.
Following retirement from the textile industry, he made and sold socks at flea markets across the state, and was a security guard for Griffiths Security.
He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, repairing clocks, and being around children.
Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Sandy Lynn Callaway of Georgia; a son, Gene Calloway and wife, Kathy, of Morganton; a daughter, Pat Crutchfield and husband, Bill, of Drexel; four grandchildren, Ray “Scott” Callaway, Kathy Wang, Tammy Lopez, all of Georgia; Trisha Crutchfield of Chapel Hill and Drexel; and five great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are his brothers, Joe Calloway and wife, Irene; Jack Calloway and wife, Gail, both of Lincolnton; Roy Calloway and wife, Lorraine, of Stanley; sister-in-law, Marge Calloway of Lincolnton; sister-in-law, Edna Calloway, of Newland; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Payne Callaway; a son, Fred Ray Callaway; and four sisters and seven brothers.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008. in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese, with the Rev. Mike Chandler officiating.
Interment followed with military rites by American Legion Post 234 at Burke Memorial Park.
The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese.

Paul A. Coffey
Mr. Paul Alfred Coffey, 98, of 1900 Hillsmere Lane, Staunton, Va., formerly of Boone, N.C., died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, at Loyalton of Staunton.
He was born Dec. 30, 1909 in Watauga County, a son of the late Dell C. and Mary Bodenhamer Coffey.
Mr. Coffey was a member of Old Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church, and was a farmer.
Survivors include one sister, Anna Belle Norris of Salisbury; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters.
Graveside services and burial was conducted Sunday afternoon, Jan. 13, 2008, at 3 o’clock at the Old Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church Cemetery.
The family received friends Sunday from 1-2:30 p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Ruth Allen Scott Greer
Mrs. Ruth Allen Scott Greer, 76, of Todd, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at her residence.
She was born in Ashe County on March 17, 1931, to the late Raymond Rice Scott and Faye Grace Scott.
Survivors include a son, Wallace Greer and wife, Alice, of Todd; a daughter, Angie Grubb and husband, Ronnie, of Wilkesboro; a sister, Pat Taylor, of Todd; five grandchildren, Rick Surber, Drew Surber, Emiline Greer, Eli Greer and Isaac Greer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Junior Howell; and a sister, Gilda Scott Reid.
Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Elledge officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Jean Camden Martin
Ms. Jean Camden Martin, 79, of Boone, and a former resident of Roanoke, Va., died Wednesday morning, Jan. 9, 2008, at Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living.
She was born August 5, 1928 in Roanoke, Va., a daughter of the late E. R. and Millie Garst Camden.
Ms. Martin was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Roanoke. She had formerly worked at C & P Telephone and the American Red Cross in Roanoke.
Surviving are two daughters, Sue Newell and husband, John, of Blowing Rock and Connie McCraw and husband, Ed, of Hartsdale, New York; two grandchildren, Amy and Jeff Newell of Blowing Rock; one brother, Donald Camden of Dillwyn, Va.; one niece, Beth Scott of Salem, Va.; and one nephew, David Camden of Roanoke.
A memorial service was conducted Saturday afternoon, Jan. 12, 2008, at 1:30 at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone, officiated by Dr. Ron Bowie. Graveside and memorial services will be Monday in Roanoke, Va.

Rachel Garrison Rose
Mrs. Rachel Garrison Rose, 93, of Blowing Rock, formerly of Charlotte, died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 9, 2008, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 22, 1914 in Mecklenburg County, the youngest child of the late Harvey Edgar and Minford Marshall Garrison.
Mrs. Rose graduated from Charlotte Technical High School, and after business school, she was employed by Southern Bell. After 24 years, Mrs. Rose retired from Pennwalt Corporation in 1978. She then moved to Blowing Rock where she was a part-time secretary for a local CPA. Mrs. Rose was a member and past treasurer of the Daniel Boone Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock, where she was an elder and treasurer of the Women of the Church. She was an honorary life member of the Presbyterian Women, and past president and treasurer of the Blowing Rock Community Club. She was a member of the Blowing Rock Historical Society, and was Blowing Rock Woman of the Year in 1996.
Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca Zepeda and husband, Gary, of Charlotte; two grandsons, Gary Zepeda, II and David Zepeda, both of Charlotte; and one great-granddaughter, KenLee Zepeda of Charlotte. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bennett Rose; one grandson, Kevin Zepeda; three sisters, and one brother.
A memorial service for Mrs. Rachel Garrison Rose was conducted Saturday afternoon, Jan. 12, 2008, at 2:00 o'clock, at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church. Officiating was the Rev. Charlie Landreth and Dr. Charles Carter.

Dorothy Edwards Shepard
Mrs. Dorothy Edwards Shepard, 73, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 10, 2008, in Charlotte, N.C.
She was born on May 10, 1934 in Duplin County, N.C., to James and Adell Edwards.
Mrs. Shepard attended Beulaville High School and graduated as Salutatorian in 1952. She married BJ Shepard at Cedar Fork Baptist on January 1, 1954. She was employed with several banks in her early career and later served over 25 years as a corporate officer of two Charlotte businesses. Mrs. Shepard enjoyed gardening and was known to have two green thumbs; as well as reading, studying history, spending time with her grandchildren and spending time at their mountain house. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church since 1956. She was an avid traveler, having visited most of the lower 48 states, as well as Europe, South America and Mexico.
Survivors include her husband, BJ Shepard of Charlotte, N.C.; two children, Roger Wade Shepard and wife, Cindy Helton Shepard, of Charlotte, N.C. and Magay L. Shepard and Frederick Timothy Moore, also of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren, Miles Graham Shepard, James Mitchell Shepard, Abigail Lyn Shepard-Moore, Hannah Mae Shepard-Moore and Frederick Michael Shepard-Moore; a sister, Evelyn Gray Smith of Wallace, N.C.; and brothers, Arthur Gerald Edwards of Chinquapin, N.C. and James Allen Edwards of Lumberton, N.C.
Mrs. Shepard was always thinking of others and was talented at finding ways to make others feel special. She was a tender, loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and mother in law.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Baptist Church, 4622 Nations Crossing Road Charlotte, N.C., with the Rev. Earl Penell and Dr. Kenneth Moore officiating.
McEwen Pineville Chapel is assisting the family.
