Snowy sprint

Boone, ASU sign water use pact

One could call it a bridge over troubled water. A water and sewer interconnection agreement between the town of Boone and Appalachian State University could serve to not only boost water availability, but further improve relations between the two entities. Read more.

Noted photographer dies at 84
A Watauga County legend died Tuesday, but his legacy on film will live on in the community’s memory and with the countless photographs he left behind. George Arthur Flowers Jr. died at the age of 84. Read more.

Watauga school board honors retirees
The Watauga County Board of Education met Monday, Jan. 14, for its monthly meeting, where board members recognized two staff members who have recently retired and viewed presentations on the future of technology in education. Read more.

County urges Boone post office to stay
The Watauga County Board of Commissioners breezed through 17 agenda items in about an hour on Tuesday evening in a session that included several housekeeping items and a wave of concern about the announced sale of the downtown Boone Post Office. Read more.

Downtown source: Buyer found for App Twin Theatre
Sources in downtown Boone say an agreement has been reached to sell the recently closed Appalachian Twin Theatre on King Street to a local investment partnership. Read more.

Post office for sale

The U.S. Postal Service may be shipping out of downtown Boone leaving the fate of one of King Street’s most historically rich buildings in doubt. Most Boone residents would agree with a recent U.S. interior department document, calling the downtown Boone post office, “the most significant [Works Progress Administration] building in Boone.” Read more.

Council reviews ASU’s future moves
A town of Boone special public hearing became quite the hypothetical situation last Thursday. With the Boone Town Council and Boone Area Planning Commission reviewing two cases concerning Appalachian State University, members did all but bite their tongues to keep mention of the university’s proposal for a new college of education building off the official record. Mentors: Proclamation establishes January as time of local focus
January is the 7th Annual National Mentoring Month, an effort spearheaded by the Harvard Mentoring Project, MENTOR and the Corporation for National and Community Service. This campaign’s goal is to encourage adults to become volunteer mentors and work to help young people achieve their full potential. This year’s theme is “Share What You Know. Suspect confesses to breaking and entering of Daniel Boone BP
Police allege a Lenoir man is connected to a string of breaking and enterings Sunday night. Jordan Thomas Coffey, 20, was caught in the act breaking into Wheels, a car lot, on Morgantown Boulevard in Lenoir at 5 a.m. Monday morning. Read more.

SBI continues investigation into Foscoe shooting

The State Bureau of Investigation is continuing to examine the events of an officer-involved shooting in Foscoe last Wednesday night. The incident occurred at a residence on N.C. 105 South near the Avery-Watauga county line. Read more.

Town council dissects smart growth
An audit for smart growth sparked a new round of discussion at a special meeting of the Boone Town Council. The audit was commissioned in spring 2007 to assess current growth policies and make recommendations for improvement based on principles of smart growth. Read more.

Ranking county priorities, plans
The seventh in a series of community meetings was held in Boone lastTuesday night, allowing local residents to help build a platform for Watauga County’s next long-range plan. Jac Whatley, consultant with the engineering firm Martin-McGill that is helping develop the plan, led a seven-citizen oversight committee that was leading the meetings to gather input from each community, as well as how people felt about issues across the whole county.
