Wildcats pounds App State
From staff reports
DAVIDSON — Brittany Mixon’s 13 second-half points were not enough for the Mountaineers to overcome stellar three-point shooting against the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday, as the team fell 80-65.
Mixon set a career high by making seven free throws. She also pulled down eight rebounds, and blocked a shot before fouling out with just under four minutes to play. GiGi Thomas also scored 13 points for the Mountaineers, while Whitney Tosse scored 11 points.
None of it was enough to keep the Mountaineers (2-13, 0-5) from losing their sixth straight game. Applachian State shot 37 percent from the field in the first half, while Davidson hit 48 percent of its attempts. The Wildcats (9-7, 3-2 SoCon) went on a 13-2 run and also hit 6-of-11 3-point shots in the first half to claim a 40-26 halftime lead.
Appalachian State guard Sam Ramirez started the second half by scoring the first five points for Mountaineers, helping them cut the Davidson lead to 43-31.
Mixon then took over for ASU with five straight points and 11 of the team's next 15. Thomas accounted for the other four during the stretch, but it was not nearly enough to close the gap, as Davidson kept a 63-46 lead through the first 12 minutes of the second. Davidson hit 10-3-point baskets in the game, including a school record six by Honna Housley, who finished with 18 points.
Danielle Hemerka scored 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Wildcats.
Ramirez finished with nine points, six rebounds and two steals in the game. The Mountaineers hit 17-of-28 from the foul line.
