Sports update: ASU heels Wofford 52-49 

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — At one point of its season, Appalachian State was nursing a three-game losing streak and faced five road games before returning to the friendly confines of the Holmes Center. One month later, the Mountaineers won four of those games on the road, including their 52-49 win over Wofford Thursday night in front of 1,342 at Benjamin Johnson Arena. The win was Appalachian State's third straight, all coming in South Carolina. Read more.
 

Pioneers fall twice to Titans
Watauga had McDowell just where it wanted the Titans, at least in the first quarter. With Appalachian State signee Petey Hausley and point guard Brian Twitty both on the bench in early foul trouble, the Pioneers had an opportunity to take an early lead on the Titans, who are ranked No. 2 by the Associated Press in the 4-A poll. Rough second quarter sinks pesky Watauga girls

The cure for McDowell’s slow start was Kurie Washington. The McDowell forward sparked a big second-quarter run and the Titans never looked back in their 64-49 victory over Watauga at Lentz-Eggers Gym Tuesday night. Read more.

Moore earns AFCA honor
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Appalachian State’s football team continued to make history Wednesday night when head coach Jerry Moore was named the Football Championship Subdivision Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association Wednesday at the Anaheim Hilton. Read more.

Pioneers get final look at pool
VALDESE — Watauga swimming coach David Gragg knows that the Pioneers must swim at Valdese Aquatic Center in the Northwestern 4-A Conference meet next week. So, Gragg scheduled a final tune-up meet for the Pioneers against nearby East Burke at the VAC looking to get his swimmers acclimated to the pool. Read more.

BANNER ELK — Senior forward Stephanie Mullinax scored a game-high 28 points to lead Lees-McRae to a 66-58 victory over visiting Queens University Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action Wednesday night in Williams Gymnasium. Read more.

Mocs hold off App State

The Appalachian State women's basketball team flirted with an upset of the defending Southern Conference champion Chattanooga, but were unable to finish the game out and fell 68-55 Saturday at the Holmes Center. Read more.

Pioneers fall twice in weekend
The Watauga Pioneer boys basketball team dropped a pair of games over the weekend. Friday night the Pioneers fell in their Northwestern 4-A Conference home opener to Freedom 66-52. Saturday they fell 55-54 to Wilkes Central in a non-conference game. Read more.
