A Seven Devils police officer shot an armed man in Foscoe following a noise complaint on Wednesday night. The Seven Devils Police Department reported an officer responded to a mutual aid call from the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office in reference to a noise complaint involving gunfire. Globe appeal rejected
While the U.S. Forest Service won its last legal battle over the Globe Forest Management project, opponents plan to pursue other avenues and to press the Forest Service on its pledge to continue discussing the project. Read more.
New class examines science and religion
Want a better understanding of some of the basic questions of human existence? A continuing education class at Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute called “Cosmology and Consciousness” lays out a foundation for addressing the questions by discussing the way people have viewed science and religion through different eras of history. Watauga County sheriff’s reports
Dec. 20 — Glen Douglas Brooks Jr., 23, of 12851 Boone Trail Road, Purlear, was served with a warrant for arrest on a charge of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, and an order for arrest for failure to appear at a scheduled court date on a charge of possession of a schedule VI controlled substance. Operation Kidsafe to be held this weekend at University Nissan
More than 2,000 children are reported missing every day in the United States. University Nissan, located on U.S. 421 South in Boone, will be offering a free service to families in the High Country this weekend concerning this daunting figure. Beaver Dam home destroyed by fire

News update: Arrest made in Tuesday breaking and entering
A vigilant neighbor foiled an alleged breaking and entering on Pine Hill Road Tuesday morning. At 10:35 a.m., the Watauga County Sheriff's Office received a call reporting a breaking and entering at 452 Pine Hill Road, off Poplar Grove Road in Boone. (Posted Jan. 9 at 1:57 p.m.) Read more.

The Boone Town Council made certain dreams come true at its regular December meeting. With Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 19, the council supported I Have A Dream Week, which hosts and promotes various community-based activities to honor King’s legacy. Read more.

Mental health group examines state problems
Attendees were served up a bowl of “alphabet soup” at Monday night’s meeting of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The alphabetical reference was due to the many acronyms floating around the world of mental health treatment, a field that is often confusing, contradictory or complicated, but is offering new hope for positive changes. Beech Mountain man charged in sexual assault
A Beech Mountain man remains in custody after the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office received a report alleging two juveniles had been sexually assaulted and touched inappropriately. The report was made on Dec. 31 and an investigation into the incident was launched. Read more.
Deep Gap Volunteer Fire Department assists with Ashe County collision
Students at Parkway Elementary School in Deep Gap heard the surprising sound of a helicopter landing near the school Monday afternoon. The helicopter was one of the WINGS Air Rescue fleet, landing to pick up a patient from a vehicle collision that happened just over the Ashe County line. Read more.

Police seeking information on
Saturday night break-in
The Boone Police Department is seeking the public's help in identifying the suspect in a Saturday night breaking and entering. The unknown male entered Kelly Brothers Tire and Auto sometime during the night of Saturday and early morning hours of Sunday.
The suspect gained entry by cutting a hole in the exterior wall of the building. Once inside the business, the man removed four Michelin tires and an unknown quantity of Snap On tools. The photos above were taken by surveillance equipment on the premises of Kelly Brothers Tire and Auto. One shows a suspect and a truck believed to be involved. Anyone with information, or who can help identify the suspect, is urged to call the Boone Police Department at (828) 262-4500 or Watauga County Crimestoppers at (828) 262-4555. Crimestoppers pays rewards for information leading to arrests, recovery of stolen property, seizure of drugs and/or the location of wanted persons.

Early morning wreck

Monday morning crash
Brian Sutherland of the Beaver Dam Volunteer Fire Department clears the road following an early Monday morning accident on U.S. 321 North. No serious injuries were reported when a Jeep Liberty, driven by Richard B. Shook, 37, of Banner Elk, overturned on U.S. 321 North near Bethel Road. Shook was traveling southbound when black ice caused him to lose control of the vehicle at approximately 7:30 a.m. The Jeep left the right side of the road, struck the embankment and overturned. Shook’s infant son was a passenger in the vehicle. The baby was secured in a safety seat and uninjured in the accident. Shook was wearing his seat belt and sustained only minor injuries. Both were transported to Watauga Medical Center via Watauga Rescue Squad. Trooper C. Morgan of the N.C. Highway Patrol investigated the accident. No charges were filed. Pump prices will likely stay in $3 range for now
Rising prices at the pump have pushed the state’s gasoline tax to “full” and consumers can expect gas to stay in the $3-and-up territory for the rest of the year. Read more.
Fifth community planning meeting set for Jan. 8
Boone residents will have an easy opportunity to help guide the county’s future this week. Citizens Plan for Watauga, a long-term planning effort to address the county’s needs, will host a meeting Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. at Hardin Park Elementary School to hear community suggestions and concerns.

Group is getting a new year’s buzz
The Watauga County Beekeepers Association is hoping to get the buzz going on their goal of boosting pollination and sweetening the year ahead. Association president Amy Johnston said the group has more than 30 members but new beekeepers are always welcome, and even veterans will enjoy the opportunity to brush up on new techniques and learn about the latest threats to bee health. The town of Boone’s Web site is looking a bit smarter these days. The Boone Town Council will attest to this claim, considering the results of a town-commissioned smart growth audit are now available for public review online. Read more.
ABC permits: Restaurants must recycle beverage containers
If you recycle your household’s beverage containers, you know what a pain in the neck it can be to separate glass from aluminum from plastic and then separate the glass items into clear, brown and green categories as required by the recycling center in Boone. Read more.
