From staff reports
BANNER ELK — Senior forward Stephanie Mullinax scored a game-high 28 points to lead Lees-McRae to a 66-58 victory over visiting Queens University Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action Wednesday night in Williams Gymnasium.
In a game that began with four lead changes and two ties in the first four minutes it was soon evident that the Bobcats (4-7, 4-2 Carolinas Conference) would eventually control the game despite having only eight players on the bench. Lees-McRae took a 9-8 at the 16:09 mark on a field goal by Erin Thompson and never trailed the rest of the game.
The Bobcats, shooting 48.3 percent from the field, held the visiting Royals (1-11, 1-4) to 31.3 percent from the field and forced 13 turnovers.
Lees-McRae led 36-26 at halftime. The Bobcats scored first in the second half when Cortney Furr found Mullinax, who drained a 3-pointer, giving them a 39-26 lead. Queens would pull to within six several times and closed to within 52-51 with 6:50 left in the game.
But Furr answered back with a basket, and the Bobcats closed out the game by hitting 9-of-10 from the foul line in the final three minutes. Jessica Lunsford hit six straight to help seal the victory.
“I’m proud of the way this group responds to adversity,” Lees-McRae coach Sabastian Wild said. “They do everything I want them to do and have maintained a positive attitude in both games and practices. I'm glad they were rewarded for their effort with a win tonight.”
Mullinax, who went 10-of-14 from the field and 7-of-9 from the foul line, also pulled down eight rebounds and had three steals for the Bobcats.
Lunsford added 12 points and Furr scored 10, while Brittany Roberson grabbed 10 rebounds.
Markeisha Hicks scored 15 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for the Royals. Jacquia Winstead scored 13 points, while Marissa Hundley added 12 for the Royals.
