Moore earns AFCA honor
From staff reports

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Appalachian State’s football team continued to make history Wednesday night when head coach Jerry Moore was named the Football Championship Subdivision Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association Wednesday at the Anaheim Hilton.

It was the third straight year that Moore won the award. No other Division I coach has ever been named coach of the year three straight years in the 73-year history of the award.

He joined North Alabama’s Bobby Wallace (Div. II — 1993-95), Augustana’s Bob Reade (Div. III — 1983-86) and Mount Union’s Larry Kehrs (Div. III — 1996-98, 2000-02) as the only coaches to ever win three-consecutive AFCA Coach of the Year awards at any level.

In his 19th season at Appalachian, Moore led the Mountaineers to a 13-2 record, including a monumental win over FBS No. 5 Michigan in the season opener. He also guided the Mountaineers to their third straight national championship.

Appalachian State is 39-6 over the past three seasons. Appalachian State beat Delaware 49-21 in the FCS championship game.

The winningest coach in Southern Conference history, Moore has compiled a 167-70 record at ASU. He is 194-118-2 in 26 years as a head coach, including stints at North Texas and Texas Tech.

More honors
Defensive back Corey Lynch and offensive guard Kerry Brown added to their list of accolades on Wednesday when they were named all FCS All-Americans by College Sports Report.

CSR named Lynch to its first team and Brown to its second team. Both seniors are two-time consensus all-Americans and widely considered to be likely draft picks in April’s NFL Draft.

CSR also tabbed Appalachian as its FCS Team of the Year.

Final poll
Appalachian State received five points in the final Associated Press FBS poll this week. The Mountaineers finished 34th in the poll to become the first FCS/I-AA team to finish with votes in the AP poll.

The AP amended its policy of not allowing FCS-I/AA teams into its poll after Appalachian State beat Michigan, ranked fifth in the FBS at the time, 34-32 on Sept. 1.
