Icy roads Wednesday

Accident leads to hypothermia
Icy conditions were to blame for an accident on U.S. 321 in Sugar Grove Wednesday morning. Amanda Derrick, 31, of Kingsport, Tenn., was traveling southbound in a 1996 Saturn, when she lost control of the vehicle near Phillips Branch Road. The Saturn dropped off the left side of the road, rolling onto its top and landing in Cove Creek. Watauga Medics transported both Derrick and her passenger, Joshua Hash, 28, of Kingsport, Tenn., to the Watauga Medical Center where they were treated for minor injuries and hypothermia due to the cold water. The Cove Creek Volunteer Fire Department and the N.C. Highway Patrol also responded to the scene. Derrick was not charged in the incident, though driving too fast for weather conditions was cited on the accident report. There have been several motorists to lose control of their vehicles on Wednesday's icy roads. However, both the Highway Patrol and Boone Police Department reported no serious accidents as of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Members of the Cove Creek Volunteer Fire Department are shown checking for additional passengers after the accident occurred on Phillips Branch Road.

2007: What A Year!

Looking BACK (to back to back)
This past year will long be remembered as the one that put Boone on the national map after the Appalachian State Mountaineers pulled what has been hailed as the college football upset of the century — defeating Michigan 34-32 on Sept. 1 in Ann Arbor. The implausible win was a prelude to the Mountaineers’ third consecutive national championship.
