AppalCART is looking for ideas or proposals for art projects in connection with the building of a new AppalCART bus station on the N.C. 105 Bypass.
The station will break ground in the spring, and as part of its transportation grant for construction, 1 percent of the allocated transportation funds were dedicated for “Art In Transit,” designed through the Federal Transit Administration to allow mass transit systems to be “positive symbols for cities, attracting local riders, tourists, and the attention of decision makers for national and international events.”
Joanne Wilcox, secretary for AppalCART, said a committee has been formed to field proposals from local artists. The project has a budget of $45,000, and that money may be spread among more than one project, depending on the proposals received and the committee’s decisions.
“The art could be in the facility, or something in a bus shelter,” Wilcox said. “This is a one-time project and we’re letting people know we’re taking proposals for this art.”
The committee is accepting ideas from the general public as well, though artists, sculptors and designers are welcome to submit formal proposals for sculptural and two-dimensional work.
“You don’t have to have any particular credentials, but a resume or some past work would be helpful,” Wilcox said.
Preliminary proposals will be reviewed in March, and three or more proposals will be selected for further development and formal presentation, with finalists receiving stipends. One or more projects will be selected for implementation or installation by April.
According to FTA, “Good design and art can improve the appearance and safety of a facility, give vibrancy to its public spaces, and make patrons feel welcome. Good art and design also contribute to the goal that transit facilities help to create livable communities.”
AppalCART has a request for proposal on its Web site at www.appalcart.com, along with links to AppalCART history, background, and possible starting points for those brainstorming ideas. Proposals should demonstrate a connection to the site or adjacent community and culture and have an impact on mass-transit riders. Ideas are also welcome that address the history of public transportation in the county. Sketches or descriptions or small three-dimensional models can be submitted with proposals. Deadline is Jan. 31 and proposals should be hand delivered or mailed to AppalCART, Chris Turner, PO Box 2357, Boone NC 28607-2357.
The new facility will have expanded service bays for buses, with parking fields, passive solar design and air vents to help reduce the need for air conditioning. The facility is expected to be complete in 2009, with selected art being installed at the end of 2008.
