DePaul buries Appalachian State
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Sam Ramirez connected on 7-of-11 field goals for 19 points, and Brittany Mixon matched a career high with 15 points.
Still, it was not enough to derail DePaul, who blasted the Mountaineers 111-62 in the third-place game at the Maggie Dixon Surf 'N Slam Tournament.
DePaul (11-1) rattled off the first 11 points of the game before Ramirez drained a 3-pointer on her first shot of the game. Ramirez sank a pair of free throws shortly after, as Appalachian State opened an 11-7 run.
Ramirez posted 10 of the Mountaineers’ first 18 points in the game and amassed 14 by halftime.
GiGi Thomas also regained her form and scored 11 points before the intermission. Thomas finished the night with a pair of steals and an assist as well.
Three DePaul scored in double figures in the half, as the Blue Demons held a 62-42 advantage after 20 minutes.
ASU (2-10) shot 45 percent from the field in the opening stanza but was overshadowed by DePaul's impressive 23-for-41 performance, including 9-of-15 three-pointers. The Blue Demons were just as aggressive in the second half, as the team opened with a 10-0 run spanning the first three minutes.
Mixon snapped the run with her third bucket of the game. The junior forward/center scored each of the team's first six points in the second half en route to 15 for the night on 7-for-14 shooting. She landed her first career double-double as well, adding a team-leading 11 rebounds.
Appalachian set out on a 9-4 run at the 14:29 mark, as Mixon scored six and Ramirez added three. The black and gold never cut the deficit to fewer than 25 points for the remainder of the game, as each Blue Demon scored at least four points in the contest. Four players posted double-figure points.
Ervin takes fifth in Southern Scuffle
GREENSBORO — Thanks to a fifth place effort by Scott Ervin at 149-pounds, the Appalachian State wrestling team finished 17th place out of 28 total teams at the Southern Scuffle Sunday.
The Mountainers narrowly missed claiming top honors for any Southern Conference team, finishing 5.5 pounds shy of host UNC Greensboro.
Ervin, the No. 4 seed in his weightclass, made a nice run on Championship Sunday, winning five of his six matches to advance to the medal round.
In the opener, Ervin defeated the No. 7 seed by a tech fall, 17-0. Next up was the No. 2 seed Darrion Caldwell, ranked No. 3 in the USA Today/NWCA NCAA Division I poll. Ervin pinned Caldwell after 4:15 to stay alive in the tournament.
A pair of 5-1 and 3-0 victories put Ervin in position to take home a medal at the end of the tournament.
