LENOIR — Watauga’s boys swim team swept South Caldwell and Alexander Central, while the girls team finished second to South Caldwell in a meet held last week at the Lenoir Aquatic Center.
Jonathan Edwards did much of the damage for Watauga, which finished with 59 points. South Caldwell was a distant second with 27 points and Alexander Central was third with eight. Edwards won the 200-freestyle with a time of 2:02.94, and the 500-freestyle with a time of 5:39.94.
Edwards was also on the Pioneers’ medley relay and on their 400 relay team. The 400 relay team, which includes Konrad Kosmala, Minori Ohashi and William Rayner, finished with a time 3:40.89. The medley relay team, which Ohashi and Rayner are members, turned in a time of 1:52.73.
Rayner was equally as effective as Edwards by winning two individual events. Rayner won the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.88 and the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.22.
Kosmala and Ohashi also won individual races. Kosmala won the 50 freestyle sprint with a 24:38. Ohashi won the 100 butterfly with a 1:00.66. Teammate William Tsang was second with a 1:09.39.
Trevor Jenson added a Watauga victory in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.17.
Crystal Tsang captured the Pioneers’ lone victory in the girls’ meet with a win in the 200 individual medley. She won the event with a time of 2:40.65.
The Pioneers had several swimmers take second place. Ingrid Forsyth was second in the 200 freestyle (2:24.38) and Mallie Billing was second in the 100 freestyle (1:05.82). Elizabeth Brewer was second in the 100 backstroke (1:11.30).
Watauga’s medley relay team, comprised of Brewer, Tsang, Carrie Winkler and Billing, also took second place. So did the Pioneers’ 200 relay team (Tsang, Winkler, Forsyth and Billing) and their 400 relay team (Winkler, Brewer, Laiken Williams and Mauney).
Watauga swims again on Jan. 3 at Hickory.
