sweep Freedom in meet

MORGANTON — Watauga’s boys’ and girls’ swimming teams swept Freedom in a dual meet held last Wednesday at Freedom. The Watauga boys won by outscoring the Patriots 110-55, while the Pioneers’ girls’ team won 88-72.
The boys’ team got two first-place finishes from Alden Mast. He won the 200-meter freestyle (2:09.68) and the 100 freestyle with a 56.96.
Jonathan Edwards also finished first in the 100 backstroke and helped two relay teams to victories. The 200-meter relay team of Edwards, William Rayner, Trevor Jensen and Minori Ohashi won the event with a time of 1:40.34. Watauga’s 400-meter relay team of Edwards, Mast, Ohashi and Rayner won with a time of 3:47.66.
Watauga’s medley relay team of rayner, Jensen, Ohashi and Edwards also captured first place with a time of 1:51.50.
Jensen also captured first place in the 200 individual medley (2:24.34) and Rayner won the 100 breaststroke with a 1:07.24.
Leading the way for the girls was Mallie Billing, who won the 50-meter freestyle (29.86) and the 100 freestyle with a 1:06.12. Ingrid Forsyth won the 500 freestyle (6:32.95) and Crystal Tsang won the 100 breaststroke (1:25.35) and the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:43.60. Lauren Williams captured the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:17.21.
Watauga’s team of Williams, Tsang, Winkler and Billing won the medley relay. The Pioneers also finished second in the 200 freestyle relay (Emily Baker, Austen Mauney, Winkler and Aiden Berry) and second in the 400 relay (Tsang, Forsyth, Williams and Billing).
Watauga swims against Lenoir, South Caldwell and Alexander Central Wednesday night at the Lenoir Aquatic Center.
