SPRUCE PINE — After blowing a 10-point lead in a loss to West Caldwell last week, Watauga has been a tough team to stop. The Pioneers blasted Mitchell 64-38 in a game that really didn’t seem that close.

Commentary: Offensive line a big part of success
The only time anybody recognizes an offensive lineman on the field is when he is called for holding. Yet, with the exception of the quarterback, the five offensive line positions are the most important on the field. Read more.

Watauga swim teams sweep Freedom in meet
MORGANTON — Watauga’s boys’ and girls’ swimming teams swept Freedom in a dual meet held last Wednesday at Freedom. The Watauga boys won by outscoring the Patriots 110-55, while the Pioneers’ girls’ team won 88-72. Read more.

ASU heads for championship showdown
Armanti Edwards made sure that Appalachian State would make a third-straight trip to the FCS finals. Edwards, Appalachian State’s quarterback, put on a performances for the ages in the Mountaineers’ 55-35 victory over Richmond in front of a crowd of 24,140 at Kidd Brewer Stadium Friday. It was the largest FCS/I-AA playoff crowd for a non-championship game since the playoffs began in 1978. To read more, please click here.

TE Cardwell takes on key role at ASU
Nic Cardwell is yet another feel-good story when it comes to Appalachian State football. Cardwell is another walkon who has had a successful career with the Mountaineers. The Kernersville Glenn graduate redshirted in 2003 and played his first full season in 2004 as a backup to Daniel Bettis when the Mountaineers went 6-5 and missed the playoffs for the second straight season. Rested Pioneers dump Vikings
It seems that all Watauga needed was a little R&R Thursday night. After playing road games Tuesday and Wednesday (both losses), the Pioneers needed a little rest, according to coach Rob Sanders. The day off Watauga High students received because of the bad weather Thursday morning did the trick. Read more
Watauga sweeps Avery
Watauga’s girls’ basketball team won its second straight game Thursday, beating rival Avery 53-48 at Lentz-Eggers Gym. Ashlyn Baird, behind the strength of three 3-point baskets, led the Pioneers in scoring with 16 points. Read more

BANNER ELK — The Lees-McRae men’s soccer team finished the 2007 season as the seventh ranked team in NCAA Division II, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas final post season poll. Read more.
