Dr. Irvin Watson “Bill” Carpenter Jr.
Dr. Irvin Watson “Bill” Carpenter Jr., 84, died Tuesday evening at Taylor Glen Retirement Community in Concord, N.C.
He was born in Washington, D.C., Nov. 29, 1923, son of Ruth McCord and Irvin Watson Carpenter, Sr.
Dr. Carpenter entered Purdue University in the fall of 1941. Following Pearl Harbor, he left Purdue to volunteer for the United States Navy. He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Wisconsin until 1946 when he returned to Purdue University. He received a B. S. degree in Forestry, an M. S. degree in Ecology and a PhD. in Botany from Purdue.
He joined the faculty at Appalachian State University in 1953, and served as professor of Biology for 32 years.
In 1955, Dr. Carpenter established Appalachian’s first Greek Honor Society, Beta Beta Beta, and served as the organization’s regional vice president for 20 years.
He established the University’s Herbarium in 1958. He served as department chair from 1973 to 1980 and received the University’s first Trustees Award for Outstanding Teacher in 1971. He received the Alumni Outstanding Service Award in 1986 and was subsequently granted Professor Emeritus status.
Dr. Carpenter was a mason and a member of Snow Lodge #363 AF & AM and served as Master in 1960. He received the Veteran’s Award for over 50 years of membership. He was also as 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. Dr. Carpenter was a member of the Oasis Shrine Temple, Boone Lions Club, American Legion, Rotary Club of Boone and the First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
Long standing members of Yosef Club, he and J. Lou enjoyed countless games and gatherings for App Football. In the early days of ASTC football, he and J. Lou volunteered to film Mountaineer football games and remained avid fans throughout their lives. Following retirement, Dr. Carpenter volunteered at Watauga Medical Center and Meal on Wheels.
Survivors include his wife, Jesse Luella “J. Lou” Smith Carpenter; three daughters; Kim Carpenter Lee and husband, W. David Lee, of Monroe, Ruth Ann Carpenter Bee and husband, Matthew Bee, of Winston Salem, and Carol Carpenter Stoudt and husband, J. R. Stoudt, of Boone; and eight grandchildren, Laura and Kathryn Lee, Jocelyn, Hillary and Monica Bee, and Will, Tyler and Caleb Stoudt.
Services will be conducted Friday morning Dec. 14, 2007, at 11 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel in Boone, N.C. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Masonic Graveside services will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Marie J. Leonard
Mrs. Minnie Marie Jones Leonard, 82, of Wendell, N.C., died peacefully Monday evening, Dec. 10, 2007, in Rex Hospital.
She attended Louisburg College and was a member of Cedar Rock First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her loving daughters, Gail Jones Scoggins and husband, Douglas, of Blowing Rock, N.C., Linda Jones Walraed and husband, Don, of Raleigh; stepson, Atkin Jones of Louisburg; two sisters, Dorothy Robinson and husband, Bob, Helen Rivenbark and husband, Jack, of Rocky Mount; a brother, Wallace Smith and wife, Jean, of Gainesboro, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Atkin Jones; brothers, W. H. Smith and Thomas Smith; and her sisters, Edna Mason and Mildred Beckham.
Services will be held Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. from the chapel of Lancaster Funeral and Cremation Services. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Lancaster Funeral and Cremation Services, 804 N. Bickett Boulevard, Louisburg, N.C.

Cecil Thomas Miller
Mr. Cecil Thomas Miller, 60, of South Haven Dr., Lenoir, passed away Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital, after a long battle with heart and kidney failure.
He was born Sept. 15, 1947 in Watauga County to the late Roby Earl Miller and Thelma Potter Miller of Granite Falls.
Mr. Miller was a Sergeant in the Air Force, and a Vietnam Veteran. He ran his own roofing business and worked for his brother, R.J. Miller, a general contractor before becoming disabled. He also played with his father in the band “The Western Carolina Ramblers”. He was a member of Lenoir Church of Christ.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Camp Miller; his daughters, Traci L. Miller of Hudson, Angie Miller Clement and husband, Chad, of Hudson, April L. Hall and husband, Timothy, of Lenoir and Laura L. Miller and husband, Tommy, of Cajah’s Mountain; his sons, Thomas Allen Miller of Cajah’s Mountain, Jeffery L. Miller of Hudson, and Jackie Miller of Atlanta, Ga.; eight grandsons; two granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren; his sister, Wilma Bryant of Wilkes County; and four brothers, Roby John (R.J.) Miller of Newton, Earl Dean Miller of Burke County, Glenn “Frank” Miller of Lenoir and Keith Miller, also of Lenoir.
He was preceded in death by his father; and one sister; Melinda Miller Brown.
Services were conduced Thursday morning, December 13, 2007, at 10 a.m., at Lenoir Church of Christ with the Rev. John Mayo officiating. Burial followed at the Main Cemetery in Potter Town.

Lillian K. DeNuncio
Mrs. Lillian K. DeNuncio, 91, of Repogle Road, Boone, died Monday morning, Dec. 10, 2007 at home.
She was born in Shreveport, La., Feb. 21, 1916, a daughter of the late Carl and Emma Kolakowski.
Mrs. DeNuncio was of the Catholic faith and was a retired accountant with National Airlines. She was active at the Cove Creek Senior Center and had moved to Boone from Miami, Fla., in 2004.
Surviving are one son, Tony DeNuncio and wife, Joan, of Boone; and one brother, Ernest Kolakowski of Arizona.
Memorial services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Father Joe Mulligan.

Bill Junior Tester
Mr. Bill Junior Tester, 52, of Lenoir, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007 at Frye Regional Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 12, 1955 to William Jackson Tester and Mary Lou Ward Tester in Watauga County.
Mr. Tester was employed at Arcona Tech as a leather press operator.
Loved ones left to cherish his memory include his wife, Mary K. Tester; his mother, Mary W. Tester of Lenoir; six children, Lynn Vines, Kent Taylor, Patrick Walker, John Wayne Tester and Marie Vines, all of Lenoir; Maria Cooper of Marion; and Micheal Gant of Johnson City, Tenn.; brothers and sisters, Phillip, Amos and London Tester, all of Sugar Grove; Wilma and Shellabell Tester, both of Wilkesboro, Ivy Tyndall and Buddy Tester of Taylorsville, and Carlos Tester and Tula Faye Smith of Granite Falls; 11 grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father; his grandmother, Ivey Davis; three brothers, Keith Douglas, Walter Eli and Lloyd Henry Tester; and one granddaughter, Kelly Poore.
Services were conducted Thursday evening, Dec. 13, 2007, at 8 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Service. A graveside service was held Friday, Dec. 14, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Matnee Cemetery in Valle Crusis, N.C., with Pastor Dean Ward officiating.

Beulah Culler Clawson
Mrs. Beulah Culler Clawson, 96, of 1144 Castle Ford Road, Boone, died Saturday morning, Dec. 8, 2007, at Glenbridge Health Care Center.

She was born June 4, 1911 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Walter B. and Minerva Hodges Culler. She was a homemaker and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary C. Yokeley and husband, Bob, of Wallburg, N.C., Polly C. Combs and husband, Paul, of Boone, and Nina Sue Gurley and husband, Steve, of Lincolnton; five sons, Rev. Archie Clawson and wife, Irene, of Boone, Doyle Clawson and wife, Janice, of Stanley, Robert Clawson and wife, Betty, of Morganton, Bill Clawson and wife, Betty, of Boone, and Dennis Clawson of Dallas. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie R. Clawson; one daughter, Virginia Dare Hardy; one son, Dean Clawson; three brothers, Vance Culler, Tracy Culler, and James Culler; one sister, Nina Culler; two grandsons, Norman Hardy and Steve Clawson; and one son-in-law, Ed C. Hardy.
Services were conducted Monday morning, Dec. 10, 2007, at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Officiating were the Rev. Gary Watson and the Rev. Mike Townsend. Burial followed in the Meat Camp Baptist Church Cemetery.

Lola Goulds Greene
Mrs. Lola Goulds Greene, 97, of 1407 Flowers Branch Road, Deep Gap, died Friday morning, Dec. 7, 2007, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born April 16, 1910 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Saul and Nelia Greene Goulds.
Mrs. Greene retired from Holly Farms where she worked in labeling and packaging. She was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Monetia Wilcox, and Afta Meade and husband, William, all of Wilkesboro; and Joyce Robbins and husband, Harold, of Lenoir; three sons, Benny Greene and wife, Peggy, of Purlear, Granville Greene of Fleetwood, and Dean Greene and wife, Wilma, of Deep Gap; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Greene of Lenoir; and a brother-in-law, Ray Sheets of Wilkesboro. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Isaac Greene; two sons, Edd and Ravon Greene; three daughters, Betty Marshall, Annie Lee Shepherd, and Shelby Sheets; two sisters, Carrie Greene, and Nellie Greene; one brother, George Goulds; two sons-in-law, Ravon Wilcox and Alan Marshall, and one daughter-in-law, Dorothy Greene.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon, Dec. 9, 2007, at 2:00 o'clock, at Mountain View Baptist Church. Officiating was the Rev. Sherrill Wellborn, the Rev. David Testerman, and the Rev. Rick Cornejo. Burial followed in the Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ralph Harbin Henson
Mr. Ralph Harbin Henson, 91, of Bamboo Road, Boone, and the Davant Rehab & ECF, died Thursday morning, Dec. 6, 2007 at the Blowing Rock Hospital.
He was born April 8, 1916 in Watauga County, a son of Charles and Hattie Harbin Henson.
Mr. Henson was a member of the Deerfield United Methodist Church and was a retired partner of Henson & Craig Builders.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Moody Henson; three sons, Jerry Ralph Henson and wife, Sharon, of West Jefferson, Wayne Harbin Henson and wife, Carroll, of St. Louis, Missouri, and Larry Paul Henson of Boone; three grandsons, Chris Henson and wife, Kim, of Winston-Salem, Charles Andrew Henson of Kansas City, Kansas and Matthew Allen Henson of St. Louis, Missouri; one granddaughter, Sara Elizabeth Henson of St. Louis, Missouri; and two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Kristen Henson, both of Winston-Salem.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Hattie Harbin Henson; six brothers, Russell, Clyde, Ford, Vance, Harold and Allen Henson; and four sisters, Edith Henson, Mabel Hollar, Lucy Storie and Myrtle Penley.
Graveside services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock, officiated by the Rev. Rudy Hayes.

Evelyn P. Keyes
Mrs. Evelyn P. Keyes, 83, of 93 Meadow Park Place, Banner Elk, died Friday evening, Dec. 7, 2007, at Blowing Rock Hospital.
She was born Jan. 16, 1924 in Knoxville, Tenn., a daughter of the late Ernest Albert Phillips, Sr. and Grace Garvey Phillips.
Mrs. Keyes was a homemaker, artist and avid gardener. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and also a devout Christian.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Deborah Buxton and husband, Barry, of Savannah; one son, Gregory Keyes of Panama; two grandsons, Damian Keyes of Asheville, and Peter Buxton of New York, New York; two brothers, Ernest A. Phillips, Jr. of Patterson, and John Robert Phillips of Lenoir; and one sister, Carolyn Finklehoffe of San Marcos, Texas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas Clyde Keyes.
Private graveside services and burial were conducted Sunday morning, Dec. 9, 2007, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

Linda Kathleen Icenhour Main
Mrs. Linda Kathleen Icenhour Main, 47, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007 at her residence.
She was born March 22, 1960 to John Dean Icenhour and Viola Canter Coffey.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Main is survived by her husband, Robert Lane Main, of Yadkinville; her children, Arlie Christopher Icenhour and wife, Deborah; and James Dana Main and fiancée, Jennifer, all of Yadkinville; Dana Lee Main and fiancée, James, of New Jersey, and Kathy Elaine Main of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Jesse Icenhour, Noah Icenhour, Craig McBride, Wayne Robichaud, Jessica Robichaud, and Deja Redmond; one sister, Brenda Icenhour Ryggs and husband, David; and three brothers, Billy Dean Icenhour and wife, Dolly, Franklin Icenhour and wife, Tina, and Fredrick Icenhour and wife, Charity Louetta. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted Saturday afternoon, Dec. 8, 2007, at Elk Knob Baptist Church in Watauga County. Officiating was the Rev. Glen Woody. Burial followed in the Main Family Cemetery.

Marion Wade Osborne
Mr. Marion Wade Osborne, 87, of 204 Sellers Street, Oak Island, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007 at Dosher Memorial Hospital, Southport, N.C.
A native of Lexington, N.C., Mr. Osborne graduated from Lenior Rhyne College where he was on the football team. He was a US Marine Corps Veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. He retired from Union Carbide as General Foreman.
Survivors include a daughter, Sally Tysinger and husband, Ed, of Asheboro, N.C.; a son, Michael Osborne and wife, Dorothy, of Todd, N.C.; a grandson, Bryan and wife, Amber; a granddaughter, Kelly Adams and husband, Jeremy, of Timberland, N.C.; grandson, Marc Osborne and wife, Kara, of Conover, N.C.; grandson, Matt Osborne and wife, Kelly, of Todd, N.C.; and a great-granddaughter, Ella Adams of Timberland, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne C. Osborne; his parents, E.C. and Viola Osborne; and a brother, Ernest C. Osborne, all of Lexington, N.C.
Services will be conducted afternoon, Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro. Burial with military honors will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro.

Eva Mae Carswell Poovey
Mrs. Eva Mae Carswell Poovey, 87, of Newton, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007 at her home following a period of declining health. 
She was born on Oct. 16, 1920 in Catawba County, N.C., to the late Bryson and Matilda Moore Carswell.
Mrs. Poovey was a graduate of Startown High School and Clevenger’s Business College in Newton. She retired in 1986 after 30 years of service as an accountant for Ethan Allen Furniture Company in Maiden. She was an active member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Newton in the Startown community. She served as a volunteer for Catawba Valley Medical Center and Hospice of Catawba County.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Poovey Burgin, and husband, Will, of Boone; a brother-in-law, Joe Poovey of Newton; a nephew, Gary Poovey; and three nieces, Gena Poovey, Miriam Wilfong and Peggy Bissett.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willliam Fred Poovey; an infant daughter, and sister; and three brothers.
A Service of Remembrance will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Newton. The Reverends Christopher Christopher, Weldon Sheets, and Harry Andrews will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 pm on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Newton.

Ashley Dawn Suddreth
Miss Ashley Dawn Suddreth, 26, of 219 Spruce Street, Boone, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2007.
She was born July 14, 1981 in Watauga County, a daughter of Thomas and Karen Henson Suddreth.
Miss Suddreth was a 1999 graduate of Watauga High School and was a waitress at Banner Elk Café.
In addition to her parents, Miss Suddreth is survived by her paternal grandfather, Paul M. Suddreth of Boone; and her maternal step-grandmother, Frances Henson of Sugar Grove. She is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Dick and Iva Dean Henson; and her paternal grandmother, Jean W. Suddreth.
Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 11, 2007, at 2:00 o'clock, at Henson's Chapel United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be Pastor Judy Eurey. Burial will follow in the Cove Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday evening, from 7:00 until 8:30, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Earl Woodring
Mr. Earl Woodring, 77, of Boone, the Meat Camp Community, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, at Glenbridge Health Care.
He was born May 8, 1930, in Watauga County, a son of the late Smith and Minnie Greene Woodring.
Survivors include one brother, Burl Woodring and wife, Corina, of Todd; and one sisters-in-law, Lena Woodring, of Todd. He is also survived by one niece, Vickie Woodring of Todd; two nephews, Leroy Woodring of Todd, and Jay Woodring and wife, Elaine, of Todd; a great-niece, Kayla Yeoman and husband, Chris, of Todd; one great-nephew, Jason Woodring of Todd; and one great-great-nephew, Devon Yeoman of Todd.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Smith and Minnie Greene Woodring; and four brothers, Fate, J.D., Hubert, and Howard Woodring.
Services will be conducted Tuesday morning, Dec. 11, 2007, at 11 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Delmar James. Burial will follow in Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery.
