Big plays by Eastern Washington on special teams could not topple Appalachian State’s quest for a third FCS national championship. Eastern Washington directly and indirectly scored 21 points from its special teams, but it was still not enough to topple the two-time national champions in the FCS playoffs.

Appalachian State has seen its share of good quarterbacks this season. When the Mountaineers host Eastern Washington at Kidd Brewer Saturday in a second-round FCS playoffs showdown, they may be looking at the best they’ve seen this season.

Charter Cable, Time Warner to Air Saturday’s ASU-EWU Showdown
The NCAA and ESPN announced on Wednesday that Charter Cable in Boone and Time Warner Cable in Greensboro have received clearance to air Saturday’s NCAA Division I Football Championship quarterfinal between Appalachian State University and Eastern Washington. Check local listings for the channel the game can be viewed on in those areas. Read more.
Newell leads WHS to wins over Avery, Wilkes Central
Watauga’s Jeff Newell became a one-man wrecking crew for Watauga in its sweep of two games this week. Read more.

Watauga’s girls’ basketball team got off to a rough start by losing its first game. Two games later, the Pioneers have put together a winning record. Read more.
Pirates dump ASU
Whitney Tossie set season highs with 21 points and five steals, but the Appalachian State women’s basketball team was unable to take down 2007 NCAA Tournament participant East Carolina at home. The 75-69 loss moved ASU to 1-4 on the season and 1-1 at the Holmes Center. Read more.

ASU running back didn’t practice
Monday, Tuesday
Appalachian State running back Kevin Richardson did not practice Monday or Tuesday and Mountaineers coach Jerry Moore was unsure if the senior would play Saturday against Eastern Washington in the second round of the FCS playoffs.

Curry shoots Wildcats past ASU
Stephen Curry could get used to shooting baskets at the Holmes Center. The Davidson guard riddled Appalachian State for 38 points in leading the Wildcats to a 71-60 Monday night in the Mountaineers’ fist Southern Conference game. Curry scored the first two points of the game when the Wildcats (3-2, 1-0 SoCon) worked a play off the opening tap that allowed Thomas Sander to hit Curry for an easy layup.

SugarFest weekend returns
It’s almost that time of year again. It’s almost time for SugarFest weekend. For the fifth-consecutive year, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort kicks off the winter season with its two-day festival of action. SugarFest 2007 will be presented by the Village of Sugar Mountain Tourism Development Authority and be hosted by Sugar Mountain Resort. SugarFest will be held December 15-16 at Sugar Mountain Ski Resort. Read more.

Pioneers capitalize on Rams’ mistakes in victory
It took only a matter of seconds for Watauga to score enough points to beat Purnell Swett. The Pioneers scored touchdowns on back-to-back plays and made a three-touchdown lead stick in a 25-14 victory over Swett in the third round of the state 4-A playoffs at Jack Groce Stadium Friday. Close call: Mountaineers outlast Dukes
in first round of playoffs
Appalachian State gets one more week to defend its back-to-back national championships — just barely. The Mountaineers needed a late touchdown from quarterback Armanti Edwards and then a fumble during a heart-stopping finish in their 28-27 victory over a James Madison in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

RICHMOND, Va. — Gigi Thomas continued her recent hot streak by shooting 7-for-13 from the floor to lead the Mountaineers with 20 points, Appalachian State fell 72-53 at VCU on Sunday afternoon.
