App Twin theater closes one year short of its 70th After 69 years of downtown Boone cinema, the Appalachian Twin Theatre, known informally as "The Dollar Theater," is closing, marking the end of an era for historic downtown Boone. Read more.
Theater captured Boone history
Had the Appalachian Twin been able to hold on for one more year, the theatre would have celebrated 70 years and continued to reign as Watauga County’s oldest operating theater. However, the theater announced its closing effective Thursday and will take with it a once ornate icon from downtown Boone. Read more.

Crime update: Suspect in graffiti vandalism caught
A graffiti artist was caught in the act by Boone Police late Thursday night. Just after 10 p.m., an officer patrolling West King Street witnessed Curt Marshall Campbell, 25, previously of Asheville, spray paint in hand, vandalizing an apartment building on the 400 block. Read more.

Friends of wreck victims form online community
The community is rallying tremendous support around a family rocked by tragedy just seven days ago. Upon returning from a Thanksgiving holiday with family in South Carolina, the Newell family vehicle was struck by a man police suspect of driving under the influence. Read more.
Reyes charged with second degree murder
Further investigation into the fatal collision Friday night has led officers of the Boone Police Department to file additional charges against Juan Manuel Juarez Reyes, 24. Reyes has been charged with second degree murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Read more. Comment on this story.
Arrest made in August burglary
An arrest has been in made in connection to an Aug. 15 breaking and entering and motor vehicle theft. Investigators with the Boone Police Department have charged Joshua Duerr Pate, 30, of Boone, with first degree burglary, two counts of larceny after breaking and entering, and larceny of a motor vehicle.
Pate is alleged to have entered a Howard Street apartment, occupied by two females, during the night of Aug. 15. Read more.

Grandfather Mountain ramps up energy-saving plans with ASU’s help
Grandfather Mountain is going green. Work is currently underway to decrease the energy consumption of the Avery County attraction. In January, the park’s board of directors commissioned an energy survey by the Appalachian State University Department of Technology. The survey took an inventory of energy consumption and proposed specific solutions for Grandfather Mountain’s green initiative. Read more.

Maverick Farms has taken a big step toward its goal of sprouting a new generation of farmers. The farm, which has operated for several years in Valle Crucis as an educational facility, agritourism location and sustainable farm, recently received its non-profit status, making it eligible for grants.

Boone wreck kills local man, injures four
A three-vehicle collision killed a Boone man and injured four Friday night on N.C. 105. A 2000 Ford Explorer, driven by Juan Manuel Juarez Reyes, 24, crashed into the rear of a 2002 Lexus SUV driven by Sallie Ellis Newell, 51, which was stopped waiting to turn left on to Poplar Hill Drive.

News update: Armed negotiations end without injury
A family dispute turned into hours of armed negotiation Sunday evening. An emergency call was placed at 6:30 p.m. to the Watauga County 911 communications center. The caller reported an early middle-aged male involved in a conflict with family members on Bethel Road. Read more.
Town will take steps to get a state ‘Safe Routes’ grant
It might not be the road less traveled, but it is a safe route. The town of Boone will apply for funding from the N.C. Safe Routes to School program, which enables and encourages children to walk and ride bicycles to school. Read more.

Boone Christmas parade: CHANGE IN TIME
Join Santa Claus and friends and neighbors in downtown Boone on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 9 a.m. for the annual Boone Christmas Parade. This year's theme is "Jolly Boone Holiday Celebration." In recognition of the important contributions made within the community, the grand marshal this year will be the Watauga County Public Library. Any individual, group or civic organization that would like to participate in the parade can call the Downtown Boone Development Association at 828-262-4532 for more information. (The previous step-off time for the parade was 11:30 a.m., but due to ASU's playoff game Saturday, the parade time was changed.)
