Pioneers off to fast start
LENOIR — Watauga’s swimming teams began their seasons last Wednesday with Watauga’s boys claiming victory over South Caldwell and McDowell.
Watauga won with 145 points followed by South Caldwell with 121. McDowell was a distant third with 19 points.
Jonathan Edwards won two individual races for the Pioneers, taking the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:02.77 and the 500-meter freestyle with a 5:36.14. Edward, Konrad Kosmala, Minori Ohashi and William Raynor also won the 200 and 400-meter relays. Trevor Jensen was the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.29.
Alden Mast was second with a 2:07.53.
Raynor won the 50 freestyle and Minori Ohashi was first in the 100 butterfly (1:02.46). Konrad Kosmala won the 100 meter freestyle with a 54.98.
Mast was second in the 200 and the 500 freestyles. Ohashi was second in the individual medley and William Tsang was second in the 100 butterfly. Raynor was second and Kosmala was third in the 100 backstroke.
In the girls’ meet, Watauga finished second to South Caldwell, which won with 139 points. Watauga was second with 93 points, followed by McDowell with 59 points.
Watauga’s Rachel White won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:11.52. Laiken Williams was fourth in that race.
Elizabeth Brewer was second in the 200 individual medley and Crystal Tsang was third in the event. Katie Zeigler was second in the 50 freestyle and Tsang was second in the butterfly. Mallie Billing was second in the 100 freestyle.
Mountaineers roll past N.C. Central
Each of the Appalachian State starters scored a field goal to account for the first 10 points of the game and the Mountaineers never looked back in a 91-62 home-opening win over N.C. Central at the Holmes Center on Friday night.
GiGi Thomas led the way with 17 points, four steals, four rebounds and three assists. Whitney Tossie also scored in double figures with 13 points. Tossie was 5-for-9 from the field with five rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Robin Colbert followed up her 17 point, eight rebound game at N.C. State with six points, five rebounds, and three assists against N.C. Central.
Taylor Lake was the fifth freshman to make her debut this season, and did not disappoint. She sank a pair of free throws and hit a field goal to head to the half with four points.
At the intermission, ASU led 46-26. Lake finished the game with 11 points on 4-for-4 shooting. Lake also collected four rebounds and a block in 15 minutes of play.
The second half was more of the same, as the Mountaineers scored an additional 45 points in the half. The Mountaineers were just 3-for-12 from 3-point range, but shot .471 from the field.
