Mountaineers fall to Spartans

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Appalachian State fell 64-62 on a San Jose State basket with 0.7 seconds left in its second game at the First Shot Exempt Tournament.
One night earlier, the Mountainers beat Lipscomb 81-58 Thursday night in the tournament opener.
Brand led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting while Clayton and Minter each had a game-high nine rebounds against San Jose State. Minter also scored 13 points despite encountering foul trouble late in the game.
After a San Jose State (2-0) basket three minutes into the second half, half, the Mountaineers held the Spartans without a field goal for the next 7:47 to reel off a 21-5 run and take an 11-point, 53-42 lead with 11:52 remaining.
However, over the next nine minutes, San Jose State outscored Appalachian 20-7, with nine of the points coming from the free-throw line to take a two-point, 62-60, lead with one minute left on a Justin Graham three-pointer.
On Appalachian’s next possession, Ryann Abraham drove hard to the basket and drew a blocking foul to get to the line. Abraham calmly sank both free throws to tie the ballgame at 62-62 with 44 seconds left. Abraham finished the evening with 11 points.
The Spartans didn’t attempt a shot until five seconds remained on the shot clock. Graham missed his attempt and the Mountaineers couldn’t grab the critical rebound before it went out of bounds with eight seconds left.
On the ensuing play, Graham drilled a floater from the lane with just 0.7 seconds left.
Clayton scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Lipscomb. Appalachian State forced 18 turnovers and held Lipscomb to 35 percent shooting from the field.
Minter pulled down six rebounds.
Houston 84, Coll of Charleston 69
Robert McKiver scored 37 points while teammate Dion Dowell added 16 points as Houston downed the College of Charleston, 84-69, in the final day of action in the O’Reilly Auto Parts ESPNU Puerto Rico Tipoff on Sunday.
Houston improved to 3-1 with the win while Charleston, which plays at Fordham at 1:00 on Saturday, is 1-3.
McKiver hit 12-of-25 field goals, including 9-of-20 from 3-point land and 4-of-5 free throws for Houston (3-1). It was the most points scored against Charleston (1-3) since Keydren Clark poured in 43 points for St. Peter’s in Charleston's 85-80 win on Dec. 30, 2004.
For Charleston, Tony White, Jr. had a career-high 19 points and a career-best five 3-pointers. Freshman Andrew Goudelock added 12 points off the bench.
Georgia Southern 59, UAB 57
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Georgia Southern’s Louis Graham and Dwayne Foreman combined for 22 of the team’s 34 points in the second half to lead the Eagles to a 59-57 victory over UAB Saturday at day two of the Glenn Wilkes Classic in Daytona Beach.
Georgia Southern (2-1) held the Blazers (2-2) to just 30.5 percent shooting on the game, including 26.9 percent in the second half alone.
Elon 71, Georgia State 49
ELON – Behind a season-high 14 points from Ola Atoyebi scored 14 points and Monty Sanders added 12 to lead Elon past Georgia State Saturday.
Elon (2-1), which never trailed in the contest, also saw Montell Watson pour in a game-high 15 points.
Georgia State now owns an 0-2 record this year.
St. Louis 83, Furman 69
ST LOUIS — A three-point Furman halftime lead dissolved for good on a layup by St. Louis seven-footer Bryce Husak with 11:39 to play, and the Paladins (0-3) were unable to slow the Billiken offensive machine, falling 83-69 on the road Saturday night.
