Watauga faces Rams’ tough run offense
It seems destiny has put Purnell Swett in the role of Northwestern 4-A Conference killer.
The Rams, who take on co-NWC champion Watauga Friday night at Jack Groce Stadium in the third round of the state 4-A playoffs, has seen their share of NWC teams. Swett (10-3) opened the playoffs with a 26-0 win over South Caldwell and followed last week with a 22-21 win over A.C. Reynolds. Read more.

Appalachian State head football coach jerry Moore is good friends with James Madison coach Mickey Matthews. They call each other on the phone every now and then. Moore said he followed James Madison’s progress to the 2004 national championship. Read more.

Elders unite on field
Trey and Blake Elder have been playing catch with a football since Trey was 6-years old and Blake was four. They’ve come a long way since those days in the duo’s backyard. Saturday, the two brothers will play in the first round of the FCS playoffs against James Madison. Read more.

When Watauga running back Eric Breitenstein gained 316 yards and scored six touchdowns in the Pioneers’ 52-36 victory over Central Cabarrus, plenty of people took notice.

State 4-A playoffs: Watauga 52, Central Cabarrus 36
Watauga runner gains 316 yards, scores six TDs
Even for Eric Breitenstein, this was a big performance. Breitenstein has gained his share of yards and scored his share of touchdowns the past two years. But Watauga’s senior running back/safety outdid himself Friday in the Pioneers’ 52-36 victory over Central Cabarrus in the second round of the state 4-A playoffs at Jack Groce Stadium. Breitenstein set a career high with 316 yards rushing and with six touchdowns on just 24 carries.

Mountaineers to host Dukes in first round
The road to Chattanooga may be a bit bumpier for Appalachian State this year. The Mountaineers, seeded in the top two the previous two seasons, did not pick up a seed in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Instead, the Mountaineers host James Madison in the first round of the playoffs Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Kostis, Earp win weight classes

When the leaves have fallen and the cold winds blow, you know its wrestling time again in the High Country. The Watauga Pioneers unrolled their mats Saturday to start things off by hosting the fifth annual Old Appalachian Invitational at Lentz-Eggers Gym. Read more.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Appalachian State shot a blistering 68.4 percent from the field and staved off a late Middle Tennessee rally to claim an 84-79 victory in the final game of the First Shot Exempt Tournament Saturday evening. Jeremy Clayton led all scorers with 15 points as one of five Mountaineers in double figures. Read more.
