Boxing up kindness

Wilcox Emporium will close for new mixed-use building
The Wilcox Emporium isn’t exactly getting a facelift, but it will have a whole new interior look by next year. The emporium, located on Howard Street in downtown Boone, opened nearly 12 years ago with a variety of “mini-stores” and retail booths under one roof. Read more.
Committee searches for dam information
The town of Boone needs some dam information. In its attempt to place a historical marker at one of Boone’s most historic sites – the old New River Light and Power Company dam – the Boone Greenway, Parks and Gardens Committee has come up dry. Read more.
Watauga County district court reports
Oct. 30 — An order for arrest was issued for Charles Joshua Black, 20, of 7882 Mountain Shore Drive, Sherills Ford, for failure to appear on a charge of possession of alcohol while underage. Read more.
Keeping Thanksgiving a nonflammable day
As with many holidays, the incidence of residential fires increase on Thanksgiving. The leading cause of fire, at 42 percent, is cooking. That figure is nearly double that of a normal day. Read more.

School superintendent to retire
Watauga County schools superintendent Bobbie Short is planning to retire at the end of the school year. Short said she is retiring because she will have 35 years in her educational career and wants to spend more time with her husband and daughter. Read more.
Watauga sheriff’s reports
Nov. 5 — Damage to property and an unsecured vehicle was reported at the courthouse parking on Queen Street. A person left their vehicle without park or parking brake engaged and the vehicle rolled backward. Read more.
Council OKs redevelopment of old tobacco warehouse
It could be said the Boone Town Council has gone west. In actuality, the council has set its sights on the west end of downtown Boone, approving a zoning change to facilitate a mixed-use development and a water and sewer request for another. Read more.
Town opens valve on increased water allowance
The Boone Town Council unanimously approved an ordinance change to let water allocations flow a bit more generously. Read more.
Accessory housing proposal gets Boone council approval
The Boone Town Council attempted to make housing more affordable by adopting language on accessory housing. The council adopted a text amendment to the Unified Development Ordinance from the Boone Affordable Housing Task Force to permit accessory housing, defined in the 2006 Comprehensive Plan as “a variety of housing forms, all of which are secondary to a primary residence but share the same site or structure,” such as garage apartments or mother-in-law apartments.
