Mountaineers sweep Eagles 3-0
After the Appalachian State volleyball team’s 11-match winning streak was snapped, the team responded on Saturday with a Senior Day 3-0 sweep against Georgia Southern to secure the No. 2 seed for next week's Southern Conference Tournament. Dianna Thomas and Brittany Zahn each had 11 kills, while setter Lorelle Rau added 34 assists and three blocks. The trio finish their home careers with a 41-10 record at the Holmes Center.
Appalachian State beat Georgia Southern 30-19, 30-22 and 30-23.
Game one saw the Mountaineers (18-13, 14-4 SoCon) belt out 18 kills and just three errors. The team trailed by as many as four points early on, but after knotting the score at 12 continued to roll off six straight points to take the lead for good.
Heather Kale shined from late in the match with four aces in the midst of a seven-point run for the Mountaineers. Kale finished the night with six of the team’s nine aces, along with six digs and two assists.
Rau and Carla Durham connected on block to end the game and give ASU a 30-19 win. Durham posted a total of three blocks, 10 kills and four digs in the regular season finale.
Appalachian built up a 12-6 lead in game two before the Eagles cut the game to one point. Becca Norris stuffed the first of her four blocks in the latter half of the game and added three kills as the Mountaineers took the final four points of the game for a 30-22 win.
ASU falls in tournament
ELON — Appalachian State dropped its opening round match of the 2007 SoCon Men’s Soccer Tournament to the Elon Phoenix 2-0.
The Mountaineers close the season 6-10-3, winless in their final nine matches of the season to tie a school record. Elon improves to 8-6-4 and advances to the SoCon semifinals.
Hokies pin ASU
BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Appalachian State wrestling team fell to Virginia Tech 21-16.
Appalachian led 10-0 after three matches, but was outscored 21-6 down the stretch to drop the season opener.
Appalachian falls to 0-1while the Hokies improve to 1-0.
The match began in the 141-pound class with Marcus Cox taking the 5-3 decision over Chris Diaz. In 149-pounds, Scott Ervin took a majority decision over Matt Rosen 10-2 to push the ASU lead to 7-0.
Eddie Hutchinson kept the momentum rolling with a majority decision of 7-1 over Andre Johnson to put the Mountaineers up 10-0.
