News update: School superintendent to retire
Watauga County schools superintendent Bobbie Short is planning to retire at the end of the school year. Short said she is retiring because she will have 35 years in her educational career and wants to spend more time with her husband and daughter. Read more.
Former ASU football player arrested
A former member of the Appalachian State University football team was arrested Tuesday by officers of the Boone Police Department. Read more.
Fugitive nabbed in Banner Elk
A Rutherford County man who has been on the run nine months was arrested Wednesday by officers of the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Sugar Mountain Police Department and the Avery County Sheriff’s Office. Read more.
Municipal elections certified
The Watauga County Board of Elections had the hat ready and Sheriff Len Hagaman standing by to draw a name, but a 50-50 council race was determined after a hand count instead. Read more.

Oct. 25 — Colin Nicholson Anhut, 19, of 118 Laurel Wreath Lane, Cary, pleaded guilty to obtaining alcohol using a false driver’s license. Anhut was assessed a $100 fine and court costs. Read more.

Tobacco warehouse could light up as new business complex
The Coleman property in downtown Boone may be kicking the tobacco habit, so learned the Boone Town Council and Boone Area Planning Commission at Thursday’s quarterly public hearing. A request for rezoning from Joseph E. Coleman Jr. would see the old Coleman Tobacco Warehouse on West King Street rezoned from light industrial (M-1) to central business (B-1) to permit a mixed use of housing and retail. Read more.
New tax option proves unpopular at N.C. ballot boxes
The use of the ballot box to enact local-option taxes may be a tougher battle than originally believed, especially in launching new land-transfer taxes.
