Watauga is exactly where it was last year, in the second round of the state 4-A playoffs. Central Cabarrus would like nothing else than to make sure Watauga doesn’t end up in the third round, the same place the Pioneers were last year.

Kevin Richardson was named the Southern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week after he rushed for 215 yards and three touchdowns in Appalachian State’s 79-35 victory Saturday over Western Carolina.

Pioneers blast Cougars
Watauga’s football team let Alexander Central know that its regular season win over the Cougars was no accident. The Pioneers used big plays to blast Alexander Central 42-14 Friday night in the first round of the state 4-A playoffs. The win did not exactly mirror the Pioneers’ 50-22 rout of the Cougars back in September, but there was little doubt that once the Pioneers took control of the game, there was little Alexander Central could do to stop it. After the Appalachian State volleyball team’s 11-match winning streak was snapped, the team responded on Saturday with a Senior Day 3-0 sweep against Georgia Southern to secure the No. 2 seed for next week's Southern Conference Tournament. Dianna Thomas and Brittany Zahn each had 11 kills, while setter Lorelle Rau added 34 assists and three blocks. The trio finish their home careers with a 41-10 record at the Holmes Center. Read more.
