Ronald David Henson

Mr. Ronald David Henson, 49, of Matthews Street, Newton, and a native and former resident of the Beaver Dam community in Vilas, died Monday evening, Nov. 5, 2007 in Hickory.
He was born June 20, 1958 in Watauga County, a son of Marie Combs Henson and the late John Dana Henson.
Mr. Henson was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a hairstylist in Conover for 26 years and formerly owned and operated “The Look” Hair Salon.
Survivors include his mother, Marie Combs Henson of Vilas; one sister, Wanda Taylor and husband, Joe, of Boone; one niece, JoAnna Taylor of Lansing; and one nephew, John Taylor of Vilas. A host of special friends in the Hickory area also survive.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Dana Henson; and one brother, Harold Henson.
Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Kenny Newberry and the Rev. Gary Watson. Burial followed at the Forest Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to the Forest Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, in care of Paul Wilson, 2424 Bethel Road, Sugar Grove, N.C. 28679.

Isabelle Manning
Mrs. Isabelle Manning, 98, of Freehold, N.J. and Banner Elk, N.C., passed away on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, at her New Jersey residence.
She was born in New York City, N.Y. and was a part-time resident of Avery County for over 30 years.
Mrs. Manning was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart for over 50 years.
Survivors include her son, Donald Manning, of Banner Elk; grandchildren, Lloyd Douglas Manning of Banner Elk, and Dona K. Manning of Banner Elk; her great-grandchildren, Cassandra Westerveld, Austin Manning and Autumn Manning.
The funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, in Freehold, N.J. with Monsignor Kelly officiating. Interment followed the service at the High Hills Cemetery in Freehold, N.J. Active pallbearers were selected from friends and neighbors.

Joanne Register Green

Mrs. Joanne Register Green, 76, died after a battle with cancer on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, at the Lutheran Home of Trinity Oaks in Salisbury, N.C.
She was born on June 22, 1931, in Perry, Miss., to David Young Register and May Neal Ellis Register, and later married William Jefferson Green, now deceased.
Her father was a minister and therefore she was educated in her early years in Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. She graduated from Huntingdon Teachers College in Montgomery, Ala., with degrees in English and History. She later graduated with a Masters Degree from Appalachian State University in l980. She also took postgraduate courses in architecture and was involved in the financial investments field.
She was a Methodist and a proud member of the League of Women Voters.
Survivors include her sons, Charles Register Green of White Plains, N.Y., and Paul Stuart Green of Osaka, Japan; daughters, Carol Green Lackey of Cornelius, N.C., and Ruth Green of Greenville, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Sara Patricia Lackey and Jeffrey David Lackey of Cornelius, N.C., and Neal Okuno-Green of Osaka, Japan.
She is predeceased by both parents; her former husband; four brothers, David, Grady, Hamlin and Lambeth Register; and three sisters, Effie R. Ramsey, Virginia R. McIntyre, and Julia Register.
The family is planning a memorial service and graveside inurnment in early December 2007 at the family plot in Geneva, Ala.
The family requests that if memorial donations are desired, that they be directed to either the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks, 820 Klumac Road, Salisbury, N.C. 28144; the National Stroke Association, 9707 East Easter Lane, Centennial, CO 80112; or UNC NC Cancer Hospital, Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, School of Medicine, UNC at Chapel Hill, Campus Box 7295, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599.

Douglas Mark Earp

Mr. Douglas Mark Earp, 44, of Poplar Grove Road, Boone, died Saturday evening, Nov. 3, 2007 at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born in Watauga County, Feb. 19, 1963, a son of the late Conley Earp and Alma “Sis” Hollars Earp.
Mr. Earp was a painter and a member of Grace Baptist Church in Foscoe.
Surviving are his mother, Alma “Sis” Earp; one brother, Dallas Earp and wife, Kim, of Lenoir; two nephews, Amos Earp of Foscoe and Matthew Barnes of Lenoir.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Aud and Carrie Hollars; and his paternal grandparents, Luther and Exie Earp.
Memorial services will be conducted Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Eugene Braswell and the Rev. Jack Jones. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 6:30 until 8 o’clock.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Earp family at 1739 Poplar Grove Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Lula Greer Graybeal
Mrs. Lula Greer Graybeal, 90, of Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation, and formerly of Zionville, died Thursday evening, Nov. 1, 2007 at Glenbridge.
She was born April 29, 1917 in Ashe County, a daughter of Thomas and Zora Winebarger Greer.
Mrs. Graybeal was a member of Westside Baptist Church in Sugar Grove. She retired from Food Services at Appalachian State University.
Survivors include one son, Paul Graybeal and wife, Shirley Jean; one daughter, Ardna Graybeal Triplett and husband, Steve; and one grandson, Jonathan Triplett, all of Zionville; and one sister, Viola Trivette of Creston. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, A. P. Graybeal; one great-grandson, Michael Dane Triplett; four brothers, Noah, Roby, Frank and Rev. Elige Greer; and three sisters, Beulah Church, Mattie Brown and Allie Miller.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Franklin Pope, the Rev. Derick Wilson and the Rev. David Ward. Burial followed at the Ashelawn Memorial Park in Jefferson.
The family received friends Saturday evening from 6:30 until 8 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of her grandson, Jonathan Triplett. 2221 Silverstone Road in Zionville.

Reath Greene Kirby
Mrs. Reath Greene Kirby, 84, of Hudson, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2007 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.
She was born August 13, 1923 in Boone, a daughter of the late Levi and Mattie Taylor Greene; and the wife of the late Harry N. Kirby.
Mrs. Kirby was a homemaker and member of Hudson United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Land of Hudson; Carolyn Moore and husband, Walter, of Granite Falls; one granddaughter, Heather Youskauskas of Baltimore, Md.; four grandsons, Vincent Kirby, Caisy Moore and Chad Moore, all of Granite Falls; and Michael Kirby of Valdese; and four great-grandchildren.
Other than her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and George Greene; and one sister, Ruth Bodenhiemer.
Graveside services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007 at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Joe Parker officiating.

James Odell McGuire
Mr. James Odell McGuire, 77, of 764 Mast Gap Road, Sugar Grove, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, at his home, after an extended illness.
He was born May 6, 1930, in Watauga County, a son of the late James Monroe and Martha Rominger McGuire. He retired from Doug McGuire Construction Company and was a member of Baird’s Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Combs McGuire; three daughters, Debbie Scholl and husband, Don, of Sugar Grove; Mary Ann Hodges and husband, James, of Boone and Laurie Phillips and husband, Danny, of Sugar Grove; two sons, Jim McGuire and wife, Janet, and Doug McGuire and wife, Caroline, all of Sugar Grove; four granddaughters, Carrie Hodges and friends, Jeff Norris of Boone, Hollie Scholl, Olivia Phillips and Anna Phillips, all of Sugar Grove; eight grandsons, Josh Scholl and wife, Danielle, of Fleetwood; Eric Scholl and wife, Cortney, Wil McGuire, Garrison McGuire, Benjamin Phillips, Nicholas McGuire, Tanner McGuire and Alex McGuire, all of Sugar Grove; two great-grandsons, Daniel Scholl of Fleetwood and Mac Donald Norris of Boone; two sisters, Edna Henson of Vilas and Esther Eckenrod of Lenoir; four brothers, Francis McGuire and wife, Della Rae, of Vilas; Talmadge McGuire and wife, Bernice, of Sugar Grove; Ernest McGuire and wife, Mary, of Boone; Jack McGuire and wife, Ellen, of Vilas; a sister-in-law, Eliza Holman, of Vilas. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Waters McGuire; one grandson, Chris Scholl; one sister, Edith McGuire; one brother, Bill McGuire; three brothers-in-law, Laney Henson, Estel Eggers, and Buck Echenrod; and a special friend, Richard McGuire.
Services will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock at Baird’s Creek Presbyterian Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 10:00-11:00. Officiating will be the Rev. Darrell Bare and the Rev. Melvin Hodges. Masonic graveside rites and burial will follow in the Baird’s Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service.

Elizabeth Howard Shepherd
Mrs. Elizabeth Howard Shepherd, 92, of Main St., Cooleemee, died, Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007.
She was born Oct. 13, 1915, in Davie County to the late Will and Daisy Parker Howard.
Mrs. Shepherd was a member of Cooleemee United Methodist Church where she was a woman’s fellowship member, superintendant for children’s church, taught adult Sunday school, served on the church board and was a member of the choir until she was 90. She was a member of the Eastern Star of Mocksville and Senior Citizens of Cooleemee and Davie County.
Mrs. Shepherd taught children’s preschool/story hour at Cooleemee Library, Park Hill and Zachary House with Erwin-Burlington Mills.
Survivors include three children, Dorothy Harvey and Mary C. Shepherd, both of Staunton, Va. and Roberta (Douglas) Stutts of Winston Salem; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren including Lynn Norwood of Blowing Rock; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Claude Wellons Shepherd; six brothers; and three stepchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m., Monday, Nov. 5, at Cooleemee United Methodist Church with the Rev. Perry Bradshaw officiating. The body will be placed in the church thirty minutes before to the service. Burial will follow in Liberty United Methodist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be considered for Watauga Red Cross or the Watauga Rescue Squad; or charity of the donor’s choice.

Shirley Jean Redwine
Mrs. Shirley Jean Redwine, of Greenbay Road, Ocean Isle Beach, will always be remembered by her passion for literature, art and family.
She was born June 12, 1926 in Vilas, N.C., the daughter of Jack and Mae Holtzclaw-Smith.
Mrs. Redwine was a graduate of Cove Creek High School, Lees-McRae College and Appalachian State University, where she received a degree in education.
She was a devoted educator, retired from the Brunswick County School System in 1987 after 30 years of service. It was during this time she met her late husband, LeGrande W. Redwine, whom she married May 30, 1948.
LeGrande and Shirley are survived by two daughters, Frances Harris, and her husband, Keith, of Ocean Isle Beach and Judy Clayton, and her husband, Tony, of Ocean Isle Beach; four sons, Donald Redwine, and his wife, Gail, of Vilas; Jackie Redwine, of Vilas; Michael Redwine of Boone; and Ronald Redwine and his wife, Audrey, whom Shirley considered a daughter, of Ocean Isle Beach. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two nephews, Phillip Shomaker of Banner Elk, N.C. and Dr. Jack Billings of Rural Hall, N.C.
In respect to her passion for reading, which Mrs. Redwine passed down to her children, memorial donations may be made to the Rourk Public Library, 5068 Main Street, Shallotte, N.C. 28470.
The family received friends Friday, Nov. 2, 2007 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Services were conducted at the New Beginnings Community Church at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007. Burial followed in Brooks Cemetery.

Connie Holtsclaw Rhymer
Mrs. Connie Holtsclaw Rhymer, 59, of 2528 Shacktown Road, Yadkinville, and a former resident of Watauga County, went home to be with the lord Saturday evening, Nov. 3, 2007, at Hoots Memorial Hospital in Yadkinville, after an extended illness.
She was born August 10, 1948 in Johnson City, Tenn., a daughter of the late John Wesley and Helen Lee Holtsclaw. Mrs. Rhymer was a retired teachers assistant at Yadkinville Elementary School.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Ernie Rhymer; three daughters, Tiffany Hill and husband Wayne of Yadkinville, Kristi Rhymer of Hamptonville, and Tara Rhymer of Asheville; three grandchildren, Jacob Hill and Madison Hill, both of Yadkinville, and Alex Hobson of Hamptonville; three brothers, Mickey Holtsclaw and wife, Carol, of Homosassa, Fla., Steve Holtsclaw and wife, Ewana, of Old Town, Fla., and Danny Holtsclaw and wife, Vicki, of Rabun Gap, Ga. She is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, and several loving and caring in-laws and friends.
Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 7, 2007, at 2:00 o'clock, at Laurel Springs Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Brent Bolick and the Rev. Andy Lambert. Entombment will follow in the Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, PO Box 1267, Yadkinville, N.C. 27055.

Alma Lee Long Schmitt
Mrs. Alma Lee Long Schmitt, 81, of 1354 Soc Houck Road, Boone, died Wednesday night, Oct. 31, 2007, at Glenbridge Health Care Center.
She was born Dec. 29, 1925 in Brunswick County, N.C., a daughter of the late Vander and Viola Cook Long.
Mrs. Schmitt was a homemaker, and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Richard William Schmitt; one son, Buddy Adisey and wife, Norma, of Boone; one daughter, Dianne Daughn and husband, Bob, of Chula Vista, Calif.; two sisters, Sally Marie White and Doreatha Greene, both of Boone. She is also survived by three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister; Bertha Mae Tabor.
Services were conducted Friday afternoon, Nov. 2, 2007, at 2:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating was Pastor David Luster. Burial followed in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

George Clayton Trivette, Sr.
Mr. George Clayton Trivette, Sr., 76, of NC 88, Zionville, died Saturday morning, Nov. 3, 2007 at Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte.
He was born April 20, 1931, in Watauga County, a son of the late Dewey Clayton and Mary Ella Snyder Trivette.
Mr. Trivette was a manager with both Blue Ridge Shoe and Timberland Shoe Company. He was a veteran of the United States Marines and Army and was a member of Zionville Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Wilson Trivette, three daughters; Karen Main and Georgia Potter and husband, Gene, all of Zionville, and Lu Dalton of Jamestown, N.C., three sons, George C. Trivette, Jr., Jim Pierce of Wilmington, Will Pierce and wife, Margaret, of Vilas; twelve grandchildren, Ian Main, Jody Corum, T. J. Corum, Pam Corum, Brandi Swain, Kevin Swain and wife Melia, Jake Dalton, Suiter Pierce, Fields Pierce, Christine Pierce, Evalyn Pierce and Danielle Pierce; three great-grandchildren, Clay Corum, Ethan Swain and Giorgiannah Corum; two sisters, Cora Leigh Oliver and Pauline Roark and husband, Joe, all of Creston; and one brother; Bert Trivette and wife, Janette, of Mountain City.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Mahala Trivette; one brother, Glenn Trivette; and one sister, Mae Sutherland.
Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Zionville Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Carl Johnson. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Watauga Dialysis Center, Post Office Box 2600, Boone, N.C. 28607 or to the Watauga Hunger Coalition, 417 Meadowview Drive, Boone, N.C. 28607.
