Watauga golfer heads into second round
From staff reports

Watauga golfer Linzy Cook fired a round of 100 in the first round of the state 4-A golf tournament held at the Keith Hills Golf Course Monday.

Cook started with a par on the first hole, but she had a stretch where she shot several double bogeys and a nine on the par 4, hole No. 15.

Cook managed a 52 on the first nine and a 48 on the back nine. However, she struggled on the final hole of the course, having to settle for a 10.

“That was tough,” Cook said, after walking off the last green.

Cook was bothered by a stomach virus, but according to coach Jerry Moretz, did not complain or use it as an excuse.

“Linzy is a great kid and I know she wasn’t feeling well,” Moretz said. “She has just as much talent as anyone I have seen here. It is unfortunate that she wasn’t feeling better today. She came out in the practice round and had a 79, but really didn’t hit it as well as she is capable so we both felt good coming into today. She is tough and will be right back here tomorrow and battle it out. I feel confident that she will play much better.”

Cook went back to the links at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, but results were not available by press time.

Gastonia Ashbrook’s Megan Burnham led the field with a 76. Stephanie Wagstaff, the top golfer in the Northwestern 4-A Conference, is in second place. Wagstaff and teammate Claire Fisher, who is just six strokes behind, attend A.C. Reynolds.

Last year’s champion, Greensboro Page’s Julia Strandberg and last year’s runner-up Virginia Mayer from Myers Park are both 10 strokes behind Burnham and are unlikely to repeat last year’s finishes.

The first round was delayed 10 minutes because of frost on the course.
