Commentary: WHS wants grid fans to feel blue
Watauga’s football program wants its fans to have the blues. Oh, not the type that one feels after losing a girl, going bankrupt on the stock market or cheering for the Cubs for 100 years. Not the type that can come with meeting with the IRS, finding out that the little noise under the hood will cost $500 just for parts, or finding out that the autographed Micky Mantle baseball card found at a flea market is a fraud.

Minter earns honor
Appalachian State senior forward Donte Minter has been named to the collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Preseason All-America Team announced by the website Wednesday. One of 25 players to earn the honor, Minter is coming off an impressive debut season with the Mountaineers last season. Read more.

Watauga begins playoffs vs. Northwestern 4-A rival
When Watauga lines up for its first state 4-A playoff game Wednesday at Jack Groce Stadium, the Pioneers will see familiar faces across the midfield line.

Pioneers go blue
In anticipation of Watauga’s showdown with A.C. Reynolds for a share of the Northwestern 4-A Conference championship, Pioneers fans are encouraged to wear blue for Friday’s game. The promotion is call Watauga’s Blue Sea. The idea is to have a sea of blue waiting for the Rockets when they invade Jack Groce Stadium Friday night. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m.


Watauga golfer heads into second round

Watauga golfer Linzy Cook fired a round of 100 in the first round of the state 4-A golf tournament held at the Keith Hills Golf Course Monday. Read more.

Lynch earns league honor
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Thanks to a game high-tying 12 tackles and victory-sealing interception as time expired in Saturday’s 34-27 win at Furman, Appalachian State defensive back Corey Lynch has been named the Southern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. Read more.

Jayvees smother Patriots
By the time most of those at Jack Groce Stadium had settle in, Watauga’s jayvee football team held a 7-0 lead. By the time they left, they saw two teams combine to score 86 points. Read more.

Around the area: Landry swims in Milligan’s first meet

ASBURY, Ky. — Rachel Landry became part of Milligan College history when she swam in the college’s first meet against Asbury College, Berea College and Campbellsville University. Milligan finished second to Asbury in both the men’s and women’s meets. Read more.

NWC crown within reach
MORGANTON — In a game that is always big, Watauga called on one of its star players to play a bigger role. Eric Breitenstein had no problem delivering.
