Mountaineers like new indoor facility
The new Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility seems to have opened just in time. With the rain that has fallen in the past week, Appalachian State’s football team has taken advantage of the indoor facility. The Mountaineers did a walkthrough last Friday and has practiced Monday Wednesday and Thursday in the building, though they practiced at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Tuesday. Read more.
Hoops dinner tickets
The Appalachian State men’s basketball program will host its annual tip-off dinner on Nov. 6 at the Holmes Center. The sponsor of the event is Bandana’s Bar-Be-Que. This year, attendees will hear the Mountaineers’ five seniors give their preseptives about the upcoming season. The seniors for this season are Donte Minter, Jeremy Clayton, Doug McLaughlin-Williams, Jay McMillan and Davis Bowne. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling 262-3081.— From staff reports

Pioneers clinch league title
TAYLORSVILLE — Watauga’s soccer team showed that it can still win games, even if they are not as sharp as coach Doug Kidd would like. The Pioneers came out “flat,” according to Kidd, in the first half, but still managed to beat Alexander Central 5-0 Tuesday night. The win gave the Pioneers a 10-1-1 league record (14-6-1 overall) and the outright Northwestern 4-A Conference championship. Read more.

The Appalachian State women’s soccer team made the most of a beautiful autumn afternoon by defeating the Georgia Southern Eagles 2-1 at the ASU Soccer Stadium. Read more.

Chuck Dumke captures Woolly road race
Chuck Dumke of Boone and Jenna Crawley of Banner Elk were the male and female winners of the Woolly Worm Woad Wace on Saturday in Banner Elk. The 10-mile event began at Avery County High School in Newland and finished at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk. Read more.
Zahn earns conference honor
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — For the third week in a row, an Appalachian State volleyball player has earned honors from the Southern Conference. This time, the league named Brittany Zahn the SoCon Player of the Week. It is the second time this season she has won the award. Read more.

A little too late
It’s hard to imagine a football team gaining over 500 yards in total offense and yet not have enough points to win a game. Yet that’s what happened to Appalachian State in its 38-35 loss to Georgia Southern at Kidd Brewer Stadium Saturday, the Mountaineers’ first home loss since 2002, a streak that ended at 30 games. The Mountaineers piled up 557 yards in total offense, gaining 389 of them on the ground. To read more, please click here.

Seeking revenge from a sweep on Sept. 22, the Appalachian State volleyball team returned the favor at home against Chattanooga Saturday night. The Mountaineers swept the second-place Mocs 30-21, 30-25, 30-26 at the Holmes Center. Read more.
Breitenstein earns elite honor: Will play in Shrine Bowl
During the last two seasons, Eric Breitenstein has been the face of the Watauga football team. Last week, Breitenstein added another honor to his growing resume when he was named to the Shrine Bowl. Breitenstein is the first Pioneers to be named to the prestigious roster since Mike Ward in 1980.
