Breitenstein earns elite honor:
Will play in Shrine Bowl
During the last two seasons, Eric Breitenstein has been the face of the Watauga football team. This week, Breitenstein added another honor to his growing resume when he was named to the Shrine Bowl. High powered Eagles fly into ‘The Rock’
Since Appalachian State beat Michigan, the big question around Mountaineerland was whether or not Armanti Edwards would ever play quarterback again, or at least this season. Read more.
ASU spikes Bucs 3-0
Dianna Thomas pounded out 11 kills, while Heather Kale collected 10 digs as the Appalachian State volleyball team rolled past East Tennessee State, 30-17, 30-28, and 30-18. Read more.

Watauga shut out East Burke 4-0 on an emotional senior night where 10 members of the team played their final home conference match at Jack Groce Stadium. Read more.
Pioneers open playoffs with win
Watauga won its first dual playoff match Tuesday by knocking off South Caldwell 5-1. No doubles were played because the Pioneers had already clinched the victory. Read more.

Pioneers sweep McDowell on Senior Night
The Watauga volleyball team honored its seniors, Brett Bailey and Katelyn Creed, during a lengthy ceremony before its match Monday against McDowell. Then, the Pioneers proceeded to make quick work of the Titans, beating them in three straight games in dominant fashion. Watauga swept the Titans, winning 25-15, 25-3 and 25-9. Read more.
WHS settles for tie
ASHEVILLE — Watauga’s boys’ soccer team kept its lead on the rest of the Northwestern 4-A Conference with a 3-3 tie with A.C. Reynolds Monday night. Read more.

Fake kick two years in the making
CONNLLEY SPRINGS — When East Burke coach Mike Biggerstaff decided to use a fake field goal against Watauga, it must have been a surprise to his players. That’s because the fake had been in the game plan for the last two seasons, but the Cavaliers had not been presented the opportunity to use it, according to the coach. Read more.
Watauga dumps FHS
It didn’t take Watauga long to get back in the winning mode. The Pioneers had little trouble with Freedom by pounding the Patriots 3-0 Thursday at Lentz-Eggers Gym. Watauga won 25-12, 25-10 and 25-16.

NIT bid sets bar higher for Mountaineers
There was plenty of intensity when practice resumed at Appalachian State this weekend. Players banged into each other and one elbow even drew blood. Some of the players said it was some of the most intense practices they've ever attended. Read more.
WHS runs well at Furman
GREENVILLE, S.C. — Watauga’s boys’ cross country team finished fourth overall at the Furman Invitational Saturday. The girls’ team did even better, tying for first in the overall team event.

WHS jayvee rally falls short in loss to Cavs
It’s very difficult for a football team to fall behind by 30 points and then try to catch up. Watauga’s jayvee football team gave it a try, but fell short in a 50-36 loss to East Burke last Thursday at Jack Groce Stadium. Read more.
