Watauga’s volleyball team went through a rough week by losing both matches it played.
The Pioneers fell to Alexander Central 3-2 on Tuesday and then fell to Hickory 3-1 Wednesday night. Both games were on the road for the Pioneers. Read more.

Player of the week: Richardson wins honor for fifth time
Appalachian State running back Kevin Richardson was named co-Offensive Player of the Week by the Southern Conference Monday. It’s the fifth time in his college career that he has earned the award.

Pioneers close out home slate with win
As far as Senior Nights go, things weren’t so bad for Watauga’s girls’ tennis team. The Pioneers honored their four seniors by beating McDowell 6-3 Monday at the Carroll Complex on an afternoon that started postcard perfect and ended with a chill in the air. Read more.
Cheves leads ASU in tourney
WAYNESVILLE — Emily Cheves shot a three-over-par 147 to lead Appalachian State women’s golf team last weekend at the Great Smokies Invitational, hosted by Western Carolina at par 72, 5920-yard, Waynesville Country Club. Read more.

ASU’s back on track
ELON — It took Appalachian State running back Kevin Richardson five chances before he gained over 100 yards in a single game this year. When he finally did it in No. 5 Appalachian State’s 49-32 win over No.24 Elon Saturday in front of a record Rhodes Stadium crowd of 13,100, he gave credit to people other than himself.

Running game returns
ELON — Appalachian State has been banged up since the Michigan game, as quarterback Armanti Edwards can attest. But the Mountaineers have been hurt the most along their offensive line. It started when center Scott Suttle missed the Michigan game and was replaced by Brett Irwin. Read more.

Watauga wasn’t looking for a moral victory when they played powerful Shelby Friday night at Jack Groce Stadium. Instead, they were looking for a victory of the more conventional type. Read more.

Pioneers win two key matches
Last week was a big one for Watauga’s girls’ tennis team. The Pioneers opened last Tuesday by clipping A.C. Reynolds 5-4 in a revenge match for Watauga. Reynolds is the only Northwestern 4-A Conference team to beat Watauga, but four singles victories helped the Pioneers avoid a repeat. Read more.
WHS volleyball team dumps Cavs
There was a time during Watauga’s 3-0 win (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) over East Burke when the Pioneers were struggling. Read more.
Watauga boys take sixth
GREENSBORO — Watauga’s boys’ cross country team took sixth in the Greensboro Invitational Saturday. The Pioneers finished with 170 points, just one behind Science Hill of Johnson City, Tenn. Green Hope won the event with 79 points. Read more.
Mountaineers trip Citadel, fall to Cougars
Appalachian State’s volleyball team showed a lot of heart in its losing effort to College of Charleston Saturday at the Holmes Center. The match was the Mountaineers’ (5-11, 2-2 Southern Conference) second conference game in 24 hours. Read more.
ASU CofC tie 0-0
On a cool, clear, chamber of commerce Sunday afternoon, the Appalachian State women’s soccer team battled College of Charleston to a scoreless draw. Appalachian (5-1-3) had problems penetrating the Charleston (3-4-1) defense, only taking eight shots with three on frame. Read more.
