Mountaineers look to recapture running game at Elon
Kevin Richardson does not care how he helps Appalachian State’s offense, as long as he is contributing. In 2005 and 2006, it was by leading the team in rushing. Edwards should heal shoulder

It’s been the $64,000 question since Appalachian State beat Michigan. Who will start at quarterback this week? Last week, Armanti Edwards, who sprained his throwing shoulder at Michigan, returned to the starting lineup for the first time since the Mountaieers shocked the Wolverines 34-32. Read more.

Pioneers sweep past A.C. Reynolds
Watauga continued its quest for another Northwestern 4A championship with a bang Tuesday night by sweeping A.C. Reynolds 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-7) at Lentz-Eggers Gym. Read more.

Pioneers face two-time state champion Shelby
Anybody who sees Shelby’s 2-A classification should ignore that immediately. The Golden Lions can play with just about any program in the state. The back-to-back 2-AA state champions, Shelby plays Watauga tonight in Jack Groce Stadium, bringing an outstanding defense and an offense that is still looking to get going. Read more.

The Appalachian State men’s soccer team made an impressive statement to open SoCon play by defeating defending champion UNC Greensboro 4-0 in front of a record crowd. Read more.

Mountaineers fall to No. 5 after loss to Terriers
Appalachian State’s reign as the nation’s top-ranked No. 1 team has officially ended. The Mountaineers, who spent the last 12 weeks at the Football Championship Subdivision’s top-ranked team, slipped from their lofty perch after their 42-31 loss to Wofford last Saturday at Gibbs Stadium. MARION — Linzy Cook finished third in the latest Northwestern 4-A Conference tournament. The event was held at Marion Lake Club. Read more.

Appalachian State roundup
Johnson, Bowman pace golfers —SUNSET BEACH, N.C. — Casey Johnson and Mary Kate Bowman tied for third and 11th, respectively, among their individual fields to pace Appalachian State at this weekend's Sea Trail Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament was hosted by Elon at the par-72, 6,761/5,947-yard Sea Trail Golf Links. Read more.

Watauga jayvees 5-0 after victory
Devan Corum looks much older on the football field than he really is. Corum, Watauga’s sophomore jayvee quarterback, riddled Avery’s defense with his passing and his running in leading the Pioneers to a 39-24 victory over the Vikings Monday at Jack Groce Stadium. Read more.

Appalachian State’s men’s soccer team beat Radford 3-0 Saturday. In the win, Appalachian improves to 4-1-2 on the young season, having not fallen in their last six matches. Radford fell to 3-4-0. Read more.

MARION — Watauga’s volleyball team continued its winning ways by beating McDowell 25-13, 25-23 and 25-17 Thursday at McDowell. Read more.

Watauga jayvees slip past Cougars in three OTs
TAYLORSVILLE — Watauga and Alexander Central jayvee teams put on quite a show for those fans on both sides of Alexander Central’s stadium Thursday. What was a defensive battle for the first four quarters proved to be nothing different in the three overtimes of Watauga’s 19-16 victory. Read more.
