WHS holds up in sweep of Hickory
Watauga stepped out of Northwestern 4-A Conference play just long enough to beat Hickory 3-0 at Lentz-Eggers Gym Monday. Read more.

Watauga’s boys’ soccer team stayed unbeaten in the Northwestern 4-A Conference with a 2-1 victory over McDowell Monday at Jack Groce Stadium. Read more.
Big plays key to win
For the most part, Northern Arizona’s offense looked sharp. The Lumberjacks’ quarterback, Lance Kriesien, was a chore for the Mountaineers to stop just about every time he carried the ball. Kriesien led all rushers Saturday with 129 yards on 15 carries, including a 1-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Once again, Appalachian State has a Southern Conference player of the week. This time, defensive tackle Anthony Williams, a sophomore, earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Williams is the 13th straight Mountaineer to receiver player of the week honors. Read more.

Tough game at The Rock
Northern Arizona left Appalachian State a reminder that games against good teams from the Big Sky Conference never are won easily, even at The Rock. And though Appalachian State was in the capable hands of backup quarterback Trey Elder for the second straight game, it was Kevin Richardson’s two touchdown receptions that helped the Mountaineers claim a 34-21 victory Saturday in front of 27,104 fans, the second-largest crowd to see a game at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Game with NAU had playoff feel
Appalachian State had already beaten Michigan, the traditionally powerful program, and Division II Lenoir-Rhyne. So, when they took on Northern Arizona Saturday, it gave the Mountaineers a chance to get a look at a solid program on its way up in the powerful Big Sky Conference. Read more.

Watauga continues its stampede through NWC
It’s not always easy to play the same opponent twice in one week. Watauga’s girls’ tennis team didn’t exactly have it easy against South Caldwell, but the Pioneers managed to carve out their second 9-0 victory over the Spartans at the Carroll Complex Thursday afternoon. Read more.
Pioneers trip Spartans, Hounds
Watauga’s volleyball team continued to steamroll through the Northwestern 4-A Conference with a 3-0 victory over South Caldwell in Lentz-Eggers Gym Thursday. The Pioneers claimed a 25-12, 25-12 and 25-13 victory over the Spartans by rarely missing a serve and by forcing the Spartans into error after error trying to return serves. Read more.

The Appalachian State women’s soccer team rallied in the second half for a 2-1 victory over Charleston Southern at the ASU Soccer Stadium. Read more.
Corum burns Ashe for four touchdowns
Watauga’s jayvee football team quarterback Devan Corum threw for two touchdowns and ran for two others to lead the Pioneers to a 28-13 victory over Ashe County at Jack Groce Stadium Thursday. Read more.
Anderson upsets No. 11 Bobcats
ANDERSON, S.C. — Lahnden Onger took a pass from Zach Denson and connected from the left wing at 97:59 to give Anderson a 1-0 upset victory over No. 11 Lees-McRae in a Conference Carolinas match Saturday at Smethers Field. Read more.

Under-10 Storm wins Tri-County Classic
Clayton Mizner hit a two-run walk off double to drive in Fer Mora and Matthew Lambert in last inning of the Tri-County Classic in Rogersville, Tenn. to win the championship game over the Greeneville A’s 4-3. Adam Greene pitched five strong innings and had an RBI in the championship game before being relieved in the sixth inning by Mizner. Mizner’s clutch hit completed a story book finish for the Storm baseball team, which was playing its fourth game of the day. The Storm team completed pool play with a 2-1 record with outstanding pitching from Hunter Shore, Andy Gilliam, Mora and excellent play from Ian Watts, Tyler Church, Stedman Sauls, Colby Illich and Lambert.
The defensive highlight of the tournament was the circus catch by Illich in center field to kill a rally in the championship game. |
