Commentary: Saturday may give realistic look at ASU
Saturday is the day that the real Appalachian State season begins. Yes, it was exciting to see the Mountaineers beat Michigan 34-32. And a record crowd of 28,802 packed Kidd Brewer Stadium to watch Appalachian State smother an overmatched Lenoir-Rhyne 48-7. Read more.
Pioneers face rival Huskies
Watauga has one final dress rehearsal before the Northwestern 4-A Conference season begins. The Pioneers (2-1) venture into Ashe County (2-1) for a border showdown with the Huskies Friday at 7:30 p.m. Any problem areas that need to be fixed have been addressed in practice, according to Watauga coach Adrian Snow. Pioneers trip Patriots
Watauga’s 1-0 victory over Freedom at Jack Groce Stadium Wednesday night may or may not have Northwestern 4-A Conference championship considerations. However, since Freedom (9-1, 0-1 NWC) went into the game ranked 13th in 4-A soccer, and since Watauga is usually a team to beat year in and year out, the Pioneers likely took a big step at winning another NWC title. Bobcats’ Boracis earns conference player of the week
THOMASVILLE — Lees-McRae men’s soccer player Berin Boracis has been named the Conference Carolinas Player of the Week for week two, the second consecutive week the junior forward has earned the honor. Boracic has led Lees-McRae to a 5-0-1 record and the Bobcats are ranked 11th nationally in Division II, the highest ranking in the program’s history. Read more.
Watauga sweeps Longhorns
MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. — Watauga’s volleyball team beat Johnson County, Tenn. 3-0 Wednesday night. Nicole Tesh led the Pioneers with seven kills and four blocks. Maddi Bakken had six kills, five blocks and three serving aces, while both Elizabeth Miller and Katie Tester finished with five kills. Read more.

Trey Elder made most of opportunity
Saturday was a win-win situation for Trey Elder and Armanti Edwards.
For Edwards, Appalachian State’s starting quarterback, not playing in the Mountaineers’ 48-7 win over Lenoir-Rhyne was a chance to rest a sore left shoulder he injured in Appalachian State’s 34-32 win over Michigan the week before.
