Fundraiser will benefit Cultural Museum
Organizers hope it will be a historic occasion fit for a museum. It’s just as well that the occasion is a fundraiser for the Appalachian Cultural Museum. The beleaguered museum, which has been homeless since March 2006, when it was displaced from its previous home of University Hall to make room for Appalachian State University’s Institute for Health and Human Services, will now maintain a presence in downtown Boone. Three face death penalty in death of ASU student in 2005
The first of three trials in the 2005 murder of an Appalachian State University student is scheduled to begin Monday morning in superior court. The three men accused in the death of 19-year-old Stephen William Harrington will have separate trials. Kyle Quentin Triplett, 21, of Boone will face charges of first-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony burning of personal property and first-degree murder. Read more.

Watauga District Criminal Court
Aug. 20 —Daniel Fitzge Bennett, 21, of 1820 James St., Durham pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana up to one half ounce. Sentencing was consolidated into 120 days in jail, suspended, and two years supervised probation. Read more.

Civil suit brought by former employee against ASU dismissed
A civil lawsuit against Appalachian State University was dismissed in Superior Court.
Appalachian State University’s former vice chancellor for business affairs Jane Helm brought the suit against ASU and Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock, in his official capacity, claiming retaliation and discrimination in connection with her June 2006 resignation. Read more.

Farm Heritage Day cultivates tradition
At Farm Heritage Day, you can sample the past and the future of mountain traditions with music, exhibitions and food. It’s the 10th year of the annual festival, which will take place at the Old Cove Creek School in Sugar Grove on Sept. 15. It’s a veritable smorgasbord of pies, cakes, jams and jellies, as well as canned goods and the people who still preserve food in traditional ways. Read more.
Police Explorers program kicks off open house
The Boone Police Explorers youth program is kicking off another year of learning and training. Several agencies in the county work together to reach out to teens with an interest in a future career in law enforcement. Boone Police Department, Blowing Rock Police Department, Seven Devils Police Department, Appalachian State University Police Department and the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office have pledged their support for the program.
