Upset win suits them to a T
Visitors have flocked to Boone following Appalachian State’s historic upset of No. 5 Michigan this past weekend. King Street was bustling over the weekend and through Monday. No businesses were more crowded than T-shirt stores. Lines wrapped around racks and the overflow stood on sidewalks. To read more, please click here.

Drought could hamper autumn leaf season

Climate conditions for the year could lead to a less-than-spectacular leaf season, but September’s weather could play a major role in the fall display. Read more.

Driving While Impaired court: A motion to dismiss was granted for a DWI charge against Paul J. Carney, 49, of 1147 Lynhill Road, Boone. The motion was granted for lack of reasonable suspicion to stop Carney's vehicle. Read more.

Thursday afternoon will be story time at the Boone Mall as the mall, Rotary Club of Boone and Appalachian State University host the Read In. The read-in will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 6 in the center court of the mall, which is located off of Blowing Rock Road. Read more.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) --- What was supposed to be a tuneup turned into a stunner: Appalachian State 34, No. 5 Michigan 32.Julian Rauch's 24-yard field goal with 26 seconds put Appalachian State ahead of Michigan and Corey Lynch's blocked field goal in the final seconds sealed one of college football's biggest upsets.The two-time defending champions from college football's former Division I-AA were ahead of the nation's winningest program 28-14 late in the second quarter, then their storybook afternoon seemed to unravel late in the fourth quarter. Read more

County will break ground on new WHS
The Watauga County Board of Education has planned a ground-breaking ceremony for the new Watauga High School. The school board set Sept. 19 as the ceremony date, though school and county officials are hopeful work will be well underway and that dirt will be moved around by large equipment instead of shovels. The winning bid for grading work is expected to be accepted on Sept. 12, with work to begin the following day on the 94-acre site in the Perkinsville area of Boone. Read more.

Watauga Big Sweep set to clean up on Sept. 8
Saturday, Sept. 8 is designated as “Watauga County Big Sweep 2007 Day,” and the project is connected with a state effort to clean up litter from waterways. The county effort is coordinated by Cooperative Extension Service agent Wendy Patoprsty, though local coordinators are also stepping forward to help lead events in various communities and neighborhoods.
