Richard Everett Arey
Mr. Richard E. "Dick" Arey, 80, of Chestnut Hill Circle, Blowing Rock, died Monday evening, August 20, 2007.
He was born June 4, 1927 in Shelby, N.C., a son of the late William Griffin Arey and Catherine Roberts Arey.
Mr. Arey was a retired hotel executive, and during his career, he managed the Robert E. Lee Hotel in Winston-Salem, N.C., The Washington Duke Hotel in Durham, N.C., and was the Vice-President of Operations of the Hilton Plaza Inns in Kansas for 21 years, before his retirement in 1990. He was a past president of the North Carolina Hotel and Motel Association, the North Carolina Restaurant Association, the Kansas City Hotel and Motel Association, and the Kansas City Restaurant Association. Mr. Arey was currently serving as a Honorary Life Board Member of the North Carolina Restaurant Association.
During his retirement years, he was Vice Chairman of the Unifor Chapter of SCORE, director of the Blowing Rock Rotary Club, Elder of Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church, director of Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce, president of the Blowing Rock Country Club, and director of Blowing Rock Hospital.
Survivors include one daughter, Ann Mason of Richmond, Va.; two granddaughters, Catherine Mason of Washington, D.C. and Susan Mason of New York City; a son-in-law, William Mason; two brothers, Will Arey and wife, Jean, of Charlottesville, Va. and Bob Arey and wife, Loraine, of Shelby and Blowing Rock; and one sister, Mary Alice Dorton of Chapel Hill.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anice Graham Miller Arey.
A memorial service will be conducted Friday morning, August 24, 2007, at 11:00 o'clock, at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be Dr. Charles Carter.
A reception will follow the memorial service in the Fellowship Hall.

Beverly Rose Ivester Smith-Donadio
Mrs. Beverly Rose Ivester Smith-Donadio, 76, of 180 Meadow Hill Drive, Boone, died Tuesday evening, August 21, 2007, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 28, 1930 in Forsyth County, a daughter of the late Lawson Francis Ivester and Katherine Lucille Thrift Ivester.
Mrs. Donadio was a decorator, singer, and a writer of children’s books. She was a member of Boone United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Vicki Lee Smith-Easter and husband, Larry, of Granville, Tenn.; three sons, Karl Smith, Jr. of Boone, Theodore Francis Smith and wife, Pam, of High Springs, Fla., and Joseph Christopher Donadio and wife, Anne, of Boone; five granddaughters, Kathryn Rose Smith of Boone and Beverly Ann Smith Rowell and husband, Hank, of High Springs, Fla., Cynthia Smith of High Springs, Hallie Rose Donadio, and Cady Elizabeth Donadio, both of Boone; one grandson, Jason Smith of High Springs, Fla.; two great-grandsons, Karly Rowell and Kaden Rowell, both of High Springs; and one sister, Carolyn Cartee Nation and husband, Dr. Warren B. Nation, of Blowing Rock.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Franklin Donadio.
Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, August 25, 2007, at 2:00, at Boone United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be Dr. George Naff. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 7:00 until 9:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Lesa Rhenea Hicks
Lesa Rhenea Hicks of Fleetwood passed away at her residence on Thursday August 16, 2007.
A native of Avery County, she was the daughter of Denton and Jean Pierson Hicks of Elk Park.
Ms. Hicks had attended Mayland Community College and graduated from Appalachian State University with a BA in Science and Sociology. She was employed by Paradigm Home Builders of Foscoe as the Office Manager.
She was a member of the High Country United Methodist Church in Vilas. She enjoyed listening to Christian Pop music, hiking, playing rook, wood working and playing the guitar.
Along with her parents, she is survived by her sisters, Kathy Lunsford and husband, Mike, of Elk Park and Lena Winters and husband, Don, of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; nieces, Sarah Winters of Johnson City, Debra Winters Logel of Banner Elk, Jessica Lunsford of Elk Park and Megan Lunsford of Elk Park; nephews, Daniel Winters of Roan Mountain an Michael Lunsford and her great-nephew Caleb.
Services were conducted Tuesday, August 21st at 8:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel with the Rev. Shelly Wilson officiating. Interment services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 22nd in the Gwyn Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Shelter Rock Ministry in Foscoe or Sweetwater Springs Biblical Counseling Center in Newland.

Louise Wingate Horton
Mrs. Louise Wingate Horton, 93, of Charlotte, N.C., died August 20, 2007, at Liberty Nursing Home.
She was born in Mecklenburg County, Nov. 20, 1913, a daughter of the late George and Nora Davenport Wingate.
Mrs. Horton was a charter member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and was a school teacher and music director in Boone, N.C., and Mecklenburg County public schools until retirement. She sang in the choir and taught Sunday School and served as an Elder at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church for years.
Survivors include a number of cousins, Forrest Wingate of Charlotte, N.C., Dottie Cathey of Charlotte, Jeanette Counts of Denver, N.C., Joe Davenport of Columbia, S.C., Oscar Davenport of Spokane, Wash., and Duard Wingate of Birmingham, Ala.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Clifton Wingate and wife, Marie.
A service to celebrate her life will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James McQuiston officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 2201 Springdale Ave., Charlotte, N.C. 28203. The Session of the Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Ernest 'Gil' Laughorn
Mr. Ernest "Gil" Laughorn, 99, of 163 Shadowline Drive, Boone, died Saturday evening, August 18, 2007, at Glenbridge Health Care Center.
He was born Sept. 20, 1907 in Roanoke, Va.
Mr. Laughorn was a graduate of V.M.I. and is listed in the V.M.I. Baseball Hall-of-Fame. He was employed for 31 years at Dupont as a safety administrator. He retired to Whispering Pines, N.C. and then moved to Appalachian Brian Estates in Boone, where he has lived for the past 5 years.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Warburton Laughorn; three daughters, Leigh Douglas and husband, Richard, of Holly Springs, Miss., Judy Roberts and husband, Frank, and Jan Hayes and husband, Frank, all of Boone; two granddaughters, Erin Roberts of Boone and Samantha Steinwinder of Seattle, Wash.; and three grandsons, Tedder Roberts of Boone, David Lagerloef of California, and Charlie Douglas of Mississippi. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lyn Lagerloef.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday afternoon, August 25, 2007, at 3:00 o’clock, at Appalachian Brian Estates.

James Logan 'H.B.' Tucker
Mr. James Logan “H.B.” Tucker, 44, of Harker Heights, passed away August 19, 2007, in a Temple Hospital.
He was born Oct. 2, 1962, to Billy Tucker and Nina Culler Tucker in Oceanside, Calif.
Mr. Tucker married Janice Hope on August 26, 2006, and the couple would have celebrated one year of marriage this coming Sunday.
He began his career in the concrete industry at Mountain Top Materials in Killeen, Texas in 1993. He began working for Killeen Ready Mix in 1995 as a mixer driver. He was promoted in 2002 to Batch Plant Operator. After two years with Killeen Ready Mix he began working for Transit Mix as Senior Plant Manager in Killeen. In May of 2006 he returned to Killeen Ready Mix as a Batch Plant Operator and remained there until June of 2007 at which time he returned to Transit Mix as Sales Representative for Killeen until his very untimely death.
Mr. Tucker will always be remembered for the love he showed towards his wife, his love for NASCAR, especially retired #43 Richard Petty’s car; singing, telling jokes, helping others and his Dodge Hemi pick-up truck.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Tucker of Harker Heights; a step-son, Kenny Hope, of Jonesboro, Ark.; his mother, Nina Cooper and her husband, Arnold, of Aberdeen, N.C.; a sister, Pam Moretz of Boone, N.C.; a step-brother, Jeff Cooper of Salado, Tex.; a step-sister, Susan Clark of Tallahassee, Fla.; a half-sister, Tina Smith of South Carolina; his mother-in-law, Annie Rosenkranz of Killeen, Tex.; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Funeral Services were conducted Thursday evening at 6 p.m., August 23, 2007, at Skyline Baptist Church with Pastor Jack Husung, Sr. officiating. Cremation followed.

Mary Ellisen Barnes Ball
Mrs. Mary Ellisen Barnes Ball, 89, of 143 Berkley Avenue, Boone, died Monday morning, August 20, 2007 at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born August 11, 1918 in Warren, Pa., a daughter of Lewis and Ruth Johnston Barnes. 
Mrs. Ball was a caregiver, homemaker and teacher. She was a member of the Union Congregational Church in Avon Park, Fla.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy B. Miller and husband, Ben, of Boone; two sons, Don Ball and wife, Beth, of Boone and Allen Ball and wife, Nita, of Avon Park, Fla.; three granddaughters, Debbie Miller of Apex, Kimberly Wright of Danville, Va. and Karami Ball of Boone; five grandsons, Chris Miller and fiancé, Dusty Lloyd, of Kernersville, Buddy Ball and wife, Tina, of Danville, Va., Jeremy Ball of Boone, Brandon Ball and wife, Carla, of Avon Park, Fla. and Derek Ball and wife, Jean, of San Antonio, Tex.; five great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Clayton Rhoades of Avon Park, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her caregivers and special friends, Ellen Roark, Pam Blevins and Christie Roark.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Clayton Ball; two sisters, Pat Rhoades and Ruth Shaver; and her parents.
A celebration of life service will be conducted Wednesday evening, August 22nd at 7 o’clock at the First Presbyterian Church, officiated by Dr. Ron Bowie. The body will lie in state at the church from 6 until 7 o’clock. A reception will follow services at the church.
Graveside services and committal will be conducted Saturday morning, August 25th at 10 o’clock at the Bougainvillea Cemetery in Avon Park, Fla., officiated by the Rev. Bill Breylingar.

Martha Thomas Gragg
Ms. Martha Thomas Gragg, 61, of 544 State Farm Road, Boone, died Monday morning, August 20, 2007, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born July 25, 1946 in Bristol, Va., a daughter of John L. Thomas and the late Frances Phipps Thomas. 
Ms. Gragg was employed by Golden Corral and was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy Gragg Davis and husband, F.L., of Banner Elk; two sons, Jim Gragg and wife, Kim, and Steven Gragg and wife, Jacanna, all of Boone; her father, John L. Thomas and companion, JoAnn, of Frederick, Md.; two granddaughters, Carrie Davis Hagaman and husband, John, of Trade, Tenn., and Courtney Gragg of Boone; one grandson, Matthew Gragg of Boone; two great-granddaughters, Elizabeth Hagaman and Madeline Hagaman, both of Trade; two sisters, Helen Johnson of Bristol, Va., and Linda Hawkins of Berryville, Va.; three brothers, Ricky Thomas and wife, Tammy, and Robert Thomas and wife, Pam, all of Frederick, Md., and Michael Baker and wife, Jamie, of Piney Flats, Tenn.

Dexter Yates
Mr. Dexter Yates, 86, of 1786 N.C. Highway 194 South, Vilas, died Thursday evening, August 16, 2007, at his home.
He was born April 21, 1921 in Watauga County, a son of the late Fred and Ethel Matheson Yates.
Mr. Yates was a member of Baird’s Creek Presbyterian Church and retired owner and operator of Dexter Yates Grading. He graded many roads, home sites, lakes, and ponds in Watauga, Avery, and Ashe Counties during his 47 year career in earth moving. Many will remember his many hours aboard his dozer, in the bitter cold, opening roads in the western end of the county, following historically deep and drifting snowfalls.
Survivors include his wife, Victoria Smith Yates; four daughters, Carolyn Puckett and husband, Paul, of Boone, Patt Paal and husband, Jim, of Boone, Ann Delgrippo of Nashville, and Alice Wilson and husband, Tim, of Boone; two granddaughters, Regina Ward of Arlington, Va., and Lisa Childs of St. Peters, Missouri; three grandsons, Alex Stout of Greensboro, Daniel Wilson and Rayland Wilson, both of Boone; five great-grandchildren, Elexis Stout and William Stout, both of Greensboro, Grace Childs and Blake Childs, both of St. Peters, Missouri, and Chandler Hamby of Boone; three sisters, Jean Blake and husband, Hank, of Ash, North Carolina, Margaret Mast of Sugar Grove, and Phyliss Yates of Vilas; three brothers, Olas Yates and Fred Yates, Jr., both of Vilas, and Larry Yates. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Letha Kaiser; two brothers, Clay and Howard Yates; and a son-in-law, Michael DelGrippo.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, September 22, 2007, at 11:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel.

James Westley Fletcher III
Mr. James Westley Fletcher, III, retired Presbyterian minister, died August 15, 2007 in Hendersonville, N.C., after a lengthy illness.
He had served several churches in Duluth, Georgia and Boone, N.C., before moving to Hendersonville.
Survivors include his wife, Suzanne L. Fletcher; one daughter; two sons; ten grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 18 at Covenant Presbyterian PCA Church, 2101 Kanuga Road, Hendersonville.

Ovela Barlowe Fox
Mrs. Ovela Barlowe Fox, 94, of NC Hwy 105 South, Banner Elk, the Foscoe community, died Tuesday evening, August 14, 2007 at home.
She was born May 16, 1913 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Raleigh Ernest and Laura Josephine Stamey Barlowe.
Mrs. Fox was a member of Watauga Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Surviving are four daughters, Pansy Aldridge of Foscoe, Sue Gragg and husband, Dayton, of Blowing Rock, Alvareeta Barrier and husband, Reed, of Jonas Ridge, and Rosemary Stamey and husband, Raymond, of Jonas Ridge; three sons, Wade Fox and wife, Emma, of Marion, James Fox of Foscoe, Gary Fox and wife, Melissa, of Foscoe; one sister, Mary Styles of Marion; 24 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roby Adam Fox; a son, Denver Fox; two grandchildren, Tim and Marilyn Barrier; three brothers, Robert “Max” McCoy, Don and Kay Barlowe; two sisters, Bobbie Lee McCoy and Ruby Couture.
Services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Grace Baptist Church. Officiating were the Rev. Jack Jones and the Rev. Justin Deaton. Burial followed in the Jestes Cemetery.

Sister Ann Griffin, OP
Sister Ann Thomas Griffin, formerly known as Anna Rita Griffin, of Adrian, Mich., died August 15, 2007, at the Dominican Life Center. She was 93 years of age and in the 75th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
She was born in Chicago, Ill., to Thomas and Anna Mulcahey Griffin. Sister Ann Thomas graduated from Aquinas High School in Chicago, Ill., and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Mich.; a Master of Science Degree in Mathematics from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.; a Master of Arts Degree in Religious Education from Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island; and a Doctorate of Education in Guidance from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich.
She spent 40 years ministering in education in Dearborn, New Baltimore, Royal Oak, Adrian, and Detroit, Michigan; Oakland, California; Miami Shores and Tallahassee, Fla. She taught at BarryCollege (University) in Miami Shores, Fla. for 14 years. Sister was Campus Minister in St. Elizabeth Parish in Boone, N.C. for ten years and a member of the Finance Staff in Adrian, Mich. for seven years. She became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 1991.
Sister Ann Thomas is survived by loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation was from 6:15-7 p.m. in the Gathering Space of St. Catherine Chapel on Friday, August 17, 2007, at the Dominican Life Center, followed by Vigil Prayer at 7 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Liturgy was offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Saturday, August 18, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. Burial followed in the Congregation Cemetery.

Arthur Lawrence Griffith
Mr. Arthur Lawrence Griffith, 80, of Joe Greer Road, Deep Gap, died Tuesday afternoon, August 14, 2007 at his home.
He was born March 11, 1927 in Reading, Pa., a son of Curtis and Elsie Hess Griffith.
Mr. Griffith was retired from Johnson & Johnson in Philadelphia, Pa.
Survivors include his loving wife, Sarah Ellis Griffith; one son, Andrew; one brother, Paul; and two sisters, Audrey and Vivian.
Services will be private.

Dottie Alvertie Ward Gryder
Mrs. Dottie Alvertie Ward Gryder, 97, died August 16, 2007, at NHC Health Care Center in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
She was born July 11, 1910, in Watauga County, a daughter of Lorenzo Dow and Martha Jane Presnell Ward, both now deceased.
Dottie worked for newspapers in North Carolina, writing columns and selling advertising.
Her work appeared in the Rockingham Post Dispatch, Richmond County Journal, Watauga Democrat, Wallace Enterprise, and she retired from the Robesonian in Lumberton, N.C. as an Advertising Executive in 1982.
In Oak Ridge, she was active in AARP, and served as the chapter newsletter editor for several years.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis Gryder of Matthews, Va. and Reid Gryder of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; three granddaughters, Carla Hall and husband, Clint, of Clayton, N.C., Teresa Gryder of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Karen Austin and husband, David, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and two great-grandsons, Christopher and Jason Hall.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, Dwight E. Gryder of Rockingham, N.C.; brothers, Willard, Raleigh, Claud, and Ed; and sisters, Rosa Elma Guy, Lou Della Ward, Hettie Love, Jennie Tester, Beulah Vines and Lula Higgins.
Private services will be held at a later date.

Dora Robinson Wilson
Mrs. Dora Robinson Wilson, 79, of 725 Mable School Road, Zionville, died Saturday evening, August 18, 2007, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 18, 1928 in Johnson County, Tenn., a daughter of the late George Washington Robinson and Edith Reece Robinson.
Mrs. Wilson was a retired cook for Appalachian State University Food Services and a member of Centerview Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband, Earl Wilson; two daughters, Judy Wallace and husband, Mark, of Trade, Tenn., and Marlene Coffey and husband, Kent, of Boone; three grandsons, Dwayne Wallace and wife, Katina, of Lenoir, Shane Coffey and wife, Melanie, of Fleetwood, and Shawn Coffey and wife, Sara, of Boone; three great-granddaughters, Kaleigha Wallace and Kelsey Wallace, both of Lenoir, and Kaylee Coffey of Fleetwood; two great-grandsons, Rylan Coffey and Tyler Coffey, both of Boone; three sisters, Helen Bumgardner of Trade, Violet Mast and husband, Bob, of North East, Md., and Geneva Hurd of Mountain City, Tenn.; and two brothers, Charles Robinson and wife, Ivalee, and Justin Robinson and wife, Louise, all of Trade, Tenn. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, Seth and Sealeste Wallace; one sister, Georgia Hodge; and one infant brother.
Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, August 22, 2007, at 2:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Carl Johnson and Pastor Tom Hehenberger. Burial will follow in the Reece Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, from 6:30 until 8:30, at Hampton Funeral Home. Flowers are appreciated, or memorial contributions may be made to the Reece Cemetery Fund, 725 Mable School Road, Zionville, N.C. 28698.
