County moves Hartley Remains at WHS site
Bodies found in graves on the new Watauga High School site are being moved to a permanent resting place a few hundred yards away.
Workers found eight sets of skeletal remains on the site Tuesday, and by noon Wednesday had unearthed three more grave sites. All contained bone fragments with the exception of one, where evidence suggested an infant had been buried in a blanket but no solid artifacts were found.

Spann throws hat in Council ring
Though it got off to a fast start last Friday, filing for the 2007 Watauga County municipal elections has slowed to a mid-week crawl.
Since Monday, and as of press time, only two more candidates have filed for reelection — Boone Town Council member Bunk Spann and Seven Devils mayor pro tem Richard DeMott.
Spann filed for reelection Monday, following suit with fellow council member Lynne Mason and Mayor Loretta Clawson. Read more.
Photo contest will develop public art program
The Downtown Boone Development Association is hoping for a picture perfect fund-raiser.
It just so happens Mast General Store in Boone is going to outfit the organization’s wish by way of a photography competition this July. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the DBDA, which will, in turn, fund its public art program. Read more.
Watauga school board hires interim principals
The Watauga County Board of Education gathered Monday evening for its monthly meeting. The board recognized two new interim principles and moved on several pieces of business. Read more.
Communion alights at Mountaincare
“I think I’m a Communion junkie,” Sandy Eagle said last Thursday as she prepared to serve the Christian holy meal to the residents of Mountain Care Facilities. Eagle, a chemistry professor at Appalachian State University, visits the assisted living facility once a month to perform the service, giving its residents a rare opportunity to participate in the service. One year after its creation, the High Country Women’s Fund is preparing for their second annual Power of the Purse Luncheon, to be held at the Broyhill Inn and Convention Center on Friday, Sept. 7. Read more.

Watauga County Sheriff's Reports
June 26
Roger Lee Dreas, 23, of 307 West Sixth Avenue, Lexington was served with a warrant for arrest for failure to appear on charges of assault, battery and communicating threats. He was detained at the Watauga County Jail. Bond was set at $1,000. Dreas is scheduled to appear in district court on July 30.
Damage to property was reported on Beck Court, Boone. A suspect broke the victim's window, damaging an air conditioner. Read more.

Daniel Boone’s descendant visits High Country
Brace Boone and his family literally walked in the footsteps of their famous ancestor, though no reports of bear-killing were carved into any trees. Boone, who is an eighth-generation descendant of Daniel Boone, brought his family to the namesake town of Boone for a two-week vacation. His wife, Stephanie, and children Isabella, 5, and Victoria, 3, prowled the mountains where their kin once hunted buffalo and elk and used a hunting camp near what is now Rivers Street on the Appalachian State University campus.

County keeps tax rate even amid state upturn
Watauga County has bucked a trend across the state as property tax rates for more than two-thirds of North Carolina residents have increased during the current fiscal year. Watauga County’s property tax rate remained at 31.3 cents per $100 of property value under the budget adopted by the commissioners last month. The budget of $42.6 million dedicated one cent to construction of the new high school, continuing a move made last year when the commissioners adopted a revenue-neutral tax rate after a property revaluation increased overall property valuation. App State meets Bolivan ‘sister’ through exchange plan
It’s a long way from Bolivia to Boone. However, both locales share something in common — a sisterhood between two libraries. The library of Appalachian State University and Biblioteca (Library) Th’uruchapitas in Cochabamba, Bolivia, have shared sister library status since 2000, an accolade bestowed upon both by the White House Centennial Commission. Doc Watson returns for MusicFest ’N Sugar Grove July 13-14
For two days a year, our little Watauga County community of Sugar Grove becomes the acoustic music center of the universe. This year the organizers of the annual MusicFest ‘N Sugar Grove have outdone themselves and have scheduled some of the best country, bluegrass, folk and gospel acts in North Carolina for two days of fun, sun and flat-out great picking under the tent in front of the Historic Cove Creek High School. Filing season opens for Boone town election
Let the race begin. Filing for municipal elections opened Friday, placing several Boone Town Council seats on the ballot, as well as the office of mayor. Read more.
Storage units damaged in utility truck rollover
A utility truck ripped open several self-storage unit after it rolled down a hill Friday. The 1990 Ford utility truck, owned by Robert Sutton of Mountain City, Tenn. had left the Charter Communications office on Hodges Gap Road bound for Deep Gap on contract work. Read more.
Unknown man sexually assaults ASU student
An Appalachian State University student reported sexual battery on July 3 in Trivette Hall. Campus police reported a female student was approached by a man outside the food market in Trivette Hall at approximately 11 a.m. After a brief conversation, the student turned to exit the building. The man then grabbed her arm, waist and buttocks. Read more.

Boone woman arrested in ID theft case
Boone Police have charged a local woman with identity theft. According to Capt. William Greene, officers with the investigations division arrested Lisa Ann Whitson, 34, of Boone, on Wednesday and charged her with one count of identity theft and one count of financial transaction card fraud. Study calls attention to state’s reporting of dropouts
A major study of high-school dropouts, released by the N.C. Center for Public Policy Research, concluded that too many students drop out of high school. Read more.
