Red Cross benefits from Blood, Sweat and Gears
The reviews for the Blood, Sweat and Gears were positive from those in the front pack. Ride winner Boyd Johnson, second place finisher Chris Harkey and women’s winner Betsy Patrick are all likely to return to the event, which had 1,200 riders test its 100- and 50-mile courses.

All-Star teams begin Thursday
Watauga’s Little League regular seasons are complete. The All-Star games begin Thursday. Both of Watauga’s 9-10 year old all-star teams began play Thursday at Boone Industrial Park. Results of those games were not available by press time. Read more.

West girls win silver, boys denied
GREENSBORO — Every now and then, a State Games soccer match can be as intense as a game during the prep season. Watauga coach Doug Kidd, an assistant for the West team at the State Games last weekend, knows that from experience. Striders qualify for state
CHARLOTTE — Several members of the Watauga Striders Track Club qualified for the North Carolina USATF Junior Olympic state meet June 23-24 at Johnson C. Smith University. Read more.

Blood, Sweat and Gears winners
VALLE CRUCIS — The two Blood, Sweat and Gears winners, men’s champion Boyd Johnson and women’s champ Betsy Patrick, each did something that the ride has never seen. Johnson managed to break the stranglehold that Chris Harkey has had on the ride by outlasting the Mount Pleasant native to the finish line. Beasley eyes art, track and field at UNCA

Academics, most pursuing his art, was important when Watauga long and triple jumper Will Beasley signed with UNC Asheville. Beasley gets a chance to do both at UNCA, where he will pursue both. Read more.

ASU to be on TV
At least four Appalachian State football games have been tabbed for live television broadcasts in 2007, the Big Ten and Southern Conference announced. Read more.
