Dr. Willard L. Brigner
Dr. Willard L. Brigner, 75, of 2244 Aho Road, Boone, died Sunday, June 10, 2007, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Dr. Brigner was born March 19, 1932 in Jay County, Ind., a son of the late Clyde Oscar and Gertrude Wallace Brigner.He was a retired professor from the psychology department at Appalachian State University.
Dr. Brigner served with the United States Army during the Korean War and was a member of St. John’s Baptist Church in Raleigh. Dr. Brigner is survived by one sister, Eileen West of Westminister, Colo., and one brother, Elvin Brigner of Tampa, Fla. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial will be conducted Saturday, June 16, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock. Officiating will be Dr. Daniel Featherstone.

John Edmund Cheek
John Edmund Cheek, 86, of Watson Road, Lenoir, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2007 at Wake Forest Medical University.He was born Nov. 1, 1920 in Ashe County to the late Andrew Marshall Cheek and Celia Kiter Blackburn Cheek. Mr. Cheek was retired from Lenoir Building Supply and was a member of West Lenoir Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He was also a World War II Navy veteran.Surviving are his wife, Hazel Watson Cheek, of the home; one son, Robert "Darrell" Cheek, and wife, Sandy, of Statesville; two daughters, Shelby Jean Martin and husband, James, of Raleigh and Hilda C. Cook and husband, Joe, of Lenoir; one adopted daughter, Geraldine Williams of Lenoir; one brother, A.M. Cheek Jr. of Fleetwood, N.C.; and three sisters, Lavaun Church of West Jefferson, Jewell Walker of York, Pa., and Georgia Rader of Winterpark, Fla. Mr. Cheek is also survived by six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by one son, Ed T. Cheek, one grandson, Jason Cheek, four brothers and three sisters.Services were held Wednesday afternoon, June 13, 2007, at West Lenoir Baptist Church with the Dr. James Lockee and the Rev. Gary Teague officiating. The family received friends prior to the service at the church. Burial was in Blue Ridge Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Eddie Cheek, Monty Cook, Roger Taylor Jr., Ralph Triplett, Bill Moffitt and Kevin Hawkins, and honorary pallbearers were the Adult Sunday School Men's Class and Bruce Holman.Memorials may be made to Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St. NW, Lenoir, N.C. 28645.Pendry's Funeral Home and Crematory in Lenoir was in charge of arrangements.
Susan Ruth Pearce Hayes
Susan Ruth Pearce Hayes, 55, a resident of Boone and former well-known resident of Abingdon, Va., passed away on Sunday, June 10, 2007, at her residence. She was a graduate of Abingdon High School and was very active in the 4-H Club and the bowling league.
She graduated from ETSU with a degree in health and physical education. She went on to obtain a master's degree from the University of Tennessee. Susan worked for the Watauga County Health Department for 30 years until she retired in 2004. After her retirement, she was a part-time teacher in the Watauga school system. She was named the Eastern North Carolina Public Health Educator of the Year.Susan was preceded in death by both of her grandparents, Tim and Ruth Pearce Sr. and John and Emeline Ferguson. Susan will always be remembered as a truly caring and devoted person, who always had a kind word and a smile for everyone she met. Survivors include her son, Lucas John Hayes of Boone; her parents, Timothy W. Pearce Jr. and wife, Bernadine Ferguson Pearce, of Abingdon, Va.; two sisters, Betsy Pearce of Abingdon, Va., and Mary Hinchey and husband, Brian, of Abingdon, Va.; one brother, Timothy W. Pearce III and wife, Kathy, of Wickenburg, Ariz.; three very special nieces and nephew, Chelsea and Morgan Pearce and Adam Hinchey; three aunts, Eileen and husband, Joseph, Herdina, and Marilyn Stringfellow and Florence Dougherty; and by several cousins and numerous friends. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 14, 2007 at the Frost Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 15, 2007 at the Knollkreg Memorial Park. The family will meet at 10:30 a.m. at the Frost Funeral Home and go in procession to the cemetery for the graveside service.

Peggy A. Slaughter
Mrs. Peggy A. Slaughter, 75, of Boone, passed away April 16, 2007.She was born in Charleston, S.C., August 21, 1931. Mrs. Slaughter graduated from Meminger High School and attended the College of Charleston.Survivors include a daughter, Susan Simmons of Boone, N.C.; two sons, Stephen Slaughter of Charleston S.C. and Frank Slaughter of Walterboro; a sister, Roberta Poston of Charleston; and a brother, Walter Alsbrooks, also of Charleston; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 16, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Boone United Methodist Church Chapel.

Kathleen Reece Brown
Mrs. Kathleen Reece Brown, 65, of 1476 Tater Hill Road, Zionville, died Monday, June 11, 2007, at her residence.
She was born May 2, 1942 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Glenn and Hazel Brown Reece.
Mrs. Brown was a homemaker and a member of Zionville Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Jimmy Brown; two daughters, Joan Brown Price and husband, Doug, and Sherry Brown, all of Zionville; four sisters, Ruth Childers of Morganton, Linda Osborne of Zionville, Barbara Martin and husband, Ronnie, of Mountain City, Tenn., and Teresa Reece Stanly of Zionville; one granddaughter, Kayla Price; and two grandsons, Scottie Price and Chandler Brown, all of Zionville. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack L. Brown; and two brothers, Benny and Eugene Reece.
Services will be conducted Thursday afternoon, June 14, 2007, at 2:00 o'clock, at Westside Baptist Church.
The body will lie in state, at the church from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. David Ward. Burial will follow in the Reece Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, from 6:30 until 8:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.
At other times friends may call at the home of Doug and Joan Price, 107 Lola Perry Road, Zionville.

Dale S. Hayes
Mr. Dale S. Hayes, 49, of 519 Appaloosa Trail, Boone, died Sunday, June 10, 2007, at his residence.
He was born June 14, 1957 in Watauga County, a son of Jack and Glada Vines Hayes. He was a cattle farmer on his own farms.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hayes is survived by one son, Lucas J. Hayes of the home; two brothers, Jimmy Hayes and wife, Donna, and Richard Hayes, all of Boone; his maternal grandmother, Laura Vines of Vilas; and one nephew, Todd Hayes and wife, Ethel, of Boone.
He is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Graveside services and burial will be conducted Wednesday morning, June 13, 2007, at 11:00 o'clock, at Jont Brown Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Mark Chaney and the Rev. Joe London.

Ottie Coot Greene
Mr. Ottie Coot Greene, 86, of Flat Springs Road, Elk Park, died Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 24, 1921 in Avery County, a son of the late Jacob Lee and Polly Lundford Greene.
Mr. Greene was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, and owner and operator of Greene’s Grocery in Flat Springs. He was a member of Flat Springs Baptist Church.
Survivors include a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends, Gary Guy and wife, Shirley, and son, Jordan Guy of Elk Park.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucy Guy and Flossie Stoot; and six brothers, Don, Geter, Clate, Ted, Robert and Jesse Greene.
Services were conducted Saturday afternoon, June 9, 2007, at 2:30, at Flat Springs Baptist Church. Officiating were the Rev. Quincy Norris and Mr. Ralph Lentz. Military graveside rites and burial followed in Flat Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Franklin L. Wollenhaupt
Mr. Franklin L. Wollenhaupt, formerly of Land Harbor, passed away in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on Sept. 8, 2006.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Crossnore Presbyterian Church, Crossnore, N.C. Friends are welcome to attend. |
