Storm 17-under wins USSSA title

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Charles Derrickson broke his own school record in the first round of the 110 meter hurdles, but fell one spot short of the finals in the semifinals at the NCAA Track and Field Championships, Wednesday at Hornet Stadium. Read more.

Team places second in tourney
The 14-under Major Dugout/Worth baseball team, made up of players from Wilkes, Surry, Yadkin, Ashe and Watauga counties, won the Fourth Annual Honey Baked Ham Classic Tournament in Morganton on May 12-13 at North Gaston High School. team compiled a 3-1 record in the tournament. In the first game, the team beat the Pirates 6-4 before falling short to the Rockies 3-2. In the title game, Dugout/Worth beat the Diamond Mine Elite 8-7. Dugout/Worth won the May Blast Tournament in Morganton on May 5-6. They compiled a 4-0 record in the tournament and qualified for the USSSA World Series, which will be held in Atlanta during July. High Country Senior Games
Margaret Banks Griffith, 83, attempts to toss a football through a target during the 2007 High Country Senior Games. Watauga County Parks and Recreation is hosting the 18th annual games through June 10. More than 50 activities, art events and athletic events are offered to citizens of Watauga, Mitchell, Avery and Yancey counties who are 55 years of age and better. Events include track and field, performing and visual arts, tennis, swimming, horseshoes, golf, bowling and bridge.
