Pioneers fall in playoffs 5-4
to Chargers
BOILING SPRINGS — Watauga had enough pitching to beat Crest in the second round of the state 4-A baseball playoffs Tuesday night. The Pioneers looked like they had enough offense to squeeze out a win. But the visiting Pioneers could not avoid stumbling over themselves in a 5-4 loss to the Chargers. Mountaineers win 30th game of season
Appalachian State secured its first 30-win season in 21 years with a 15-3 victory over visiting Radford Tuesday at Smith Stadium. The 30-win season is ASU's first since 1986, when it went 40-13-1 and made its last NCAA Regional appearance. With win No. 30, Appalachian (30-23) also clinched its first winning season since 1996. WHS softball wins
CHARLOTTE — Watauga’s softball team won its first playoff game since the team converted to fast-pitch in grand fashion, pummeling undermanned Harding 24-1 Tuesday night. Watauga belted out 18 hits and took advantage of six Harding errors in picking up the win. The Pioneers play at Crest Friday afternoon in the second round. Read more.
Pioneers eye success at state meet
Watauga’s track and field team is no stranger to the state 4-A championships. Usually, the Pioneers go to the state meet with a slew of distance runners. This year, the distance team is represented, but the field events are where Watauga is represented the most. Read more.
Second half dooms WHS
WEDDINGTON — Watauga needed to play its best game of the season if it wanted to beat No. 9 Weddington and advance into the fourth round of the state 4-A playoffs. And though the Pioneers put together an effort that coach Doug Kidd was proud of, it still wasn’t quite enough to stop the Warriors, who walked away with a 2-0 victory Wednesday night.

It’s their vault
It’s no secret that distance running has been a cornerstone of Watauga’s track and field teams. A successful cross country program has often translated into a successful distance running program during spring track and field. Anderson hired to direct girls’ hoops
Klay Anderson is very familiar with defense. In fact, he is the defensive coordinator for Watauga’s football team. So don’t be surprised if Anderson stresses defense, with a dash of old-fashioned fundamentals, when he takes over the girls’ basketball program this summer. The Watauga County Board of Education made it official Monday night when they hired Anderson to coach the Watauga girls’ basketball team.

Hardee inks with Lions
It seems Mars Hill has developed quite a pipeline to Watauga High School. Dalton Hardee became the latest to sign to play sports with the college, inking a letter of intent to play baseball next year. Read more.
Latest class brings variety
Lindsay Taylor makes it a family affair when it comes to the Watauga County Sports Hall of Fame. Joe Critcher, Larry Horine and Coaker Triplett made sure the 2007 list of inductees had plenty of different sports involved. Read more.
Pioneers brace for Warriors
Watauga’s Doug Kidd and Weddington’s Ray Fumo are two of the top prep soccer coaches in North Carolina. Kidd built a powerhouse in both boys and girls soccer at Watauga, while Fumo did the same at Parkwood High before moving over to Weddington last year. However, while the two have been coaching for more than a decade, they have never coached against each other on the varsity level. Read more.

FARMVILLE, Va. — Appalachian State received two of its best pitching performances of the year on Friday, when right-handers Jason Rook and Aubrey Edens stymied Longwood in a doubleheader sweep at Lancer Stadium. Read more.

Pioneers send several athletes to finals
Randy McDonough had a feeling that if the Watauga girls’ track team was to be successful in the Western 4-A Regional at Jack Groce Stadium Saturday, the Pioneers would have to come through in some field events. Read more.

ATLANTA — Three Mountaineers recorded NCAA Regional Qualifying marks and two ASU records fell as the Appalachian State men’s track and field team competed at the Georgia Tech Invitational May 11-12. Read more.
